WIST researchers

awarded patent

WIST researchers have been issued a patent for a process they invented that opens the door for the creation of biofuels from abundantly available plant fiber.

lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose
The WIST process separates wood fiber into, from left, lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose.

It's the first patent issued to WIST, marking an important milestone for the institution. The process makes biofuels and other products from cellulosic plant material, including agricultural residues such as corn stover or plants grown specifically for fuel production, such as hardwood and softwood trees.

It is also a key step in making other high-value bioproducts, say inventors Don Guay and Eric Singsaas. Read the full story here and read more about WIST research here.
