October To Do's

First and most important thing you absolutely must do this month is to find the time to go someplace quiet such as a park, a hilltop or even a backyard and just enjoy all the beauty that autumn brings with it.

Second, and not as important, unless of course you haven't done it yet and want to, is to get any lawn seeding done before the cutoff date of the 15th.

Third....Collect any annual seeds that you would like to have for next spring and put them in an envelope and label each.

Fourth....and I said this last month also. Don't prune anything now until we get a couple of good frosts or your deciduous plants (those that lose their leaves) have lost their leaves.

Fifth....This is the perfect time of year to plant any trees you may want, especially evergreens. And....I know a place where you can get them!!!

Sixth....Plant any bulbs now so you will have lots of spring color to look forward to.

Seventh...Towards the end of the month it will be time to put down that last bit of pre-emergent weed inhibitor such as Treflan (sold here ) or Preen (the more expensive stuff) to keep down on the winter weeds. And remember to put it down right before it rains or water it in so it's not exposed to the sunlight for more than 48 hours.

Eighth....The Hummers will be leaving so you can take down your feeders, clean them good and have them ready again for next April.

and finally

Ninth....Again, find that quiet spot and enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of the season. As someone once said "Ah, yes, Autumn, when trees blush at the thought of stripping naked in public".
So...go be a voyeur!.... Did I say that?????

Recent Email

The following is an email that I received about a week ago and thought I would share it with everyone.

"In the attachment is the plant that you said would look dead and not to dig it up. This year I gave up on it because it was the middle of June and nothing but dead branches. I started pulling on it and it felt like it still had life. So I left it there and in July it started coming up again. This has never bloomed like this before. Never give up on this plant."

This is a dwarf Crape Myrtle and in this area Crape Myrtles are notorious for looking and acting like they are dead in the spring normally until May in this area. But with extreme cold the past two winters many plants including this Crape Myrtle have struggled to rejoin the world of the living until much later than normal. So, as this customer states don't give up on this plant.

A Closing Thought

"It aint over til it's over"

Yogi's wife once asked him where he wanted to be buried, in St. Louis, New York or Montclair.
"I don't know" he said "Why don't you surprise me"

"Yogi-isms" will live on forever!
