AHH....November
A month for which I have a love / hate relationship. I love it because it means we are winding down here at the Nursery for the year and Ava and myself are looking forward to a much needed "hibernation".....of sorts! Still work to do on a daily basis but nothing like the hectic 7 day/ week during the season. And, I hate it becaues it means an end to the warm weather, seeing all the friendly faces (mostly...haha) and seeing all the various plants doin' all their pretty stuff. Only good thing about plants losing their leaves and going dormant is that it gives you this great anticipation knowing that Spring is just around the corner when they will be busting out all over again.
For now however, we are still very anxious as there is still alot to do to kinda, sort of close down. Most, if not all, of the plants we have dragged out of the houses ( both for your veiwing pleasure and to give them growing space) need to be re-gathered and put back into those houses together with all the new plants we have been growing. This can oftentimes be a chore in itself as there never seems to be quite enough room. Each house then needs to be covered with over-wintering plastic to protect the little babies from the harsh, drying winter winds to help them survive. Covering the houses by the way is an "extremely" fun time (haha) so if any of you would care to join us for 2-3 days of incredible and exhilerating pleasure please call or drop us a email.
Let's see, what else? Oh yeh...the water lines all need to be drained and the pump and fountain need to come out of the irrigation lake. The pumps need to come out of the waterfalls since there is no reason to run them ( at least here) during the winter. All the fountains that stay outside need to be drained, dried, stuffed with a pile of rags or whatever to keep the moisture out and covered. This is a hint by the way in case you are the proud owner of a fountain.
And then after we get this all completed together with a bunch of more mundane jobs just like you all also have to do, it is then that time of year to fire up the propagation house again ( this time with under ground heat ) and take all of our "evergreen cuttings" which will keep us busy through the end of the year.
Then it's on to stacks of paperwork that have piled up, taxes as usual,
updating our web site a bit, placing orders for plants we can't economically grow here and that everyone still likes and wants, monitoring the cuttings, and so forth and so forth.
So, now you can see why I said "a hibernation of sorts". Sorry to say we do not get to spend the winter in our luxurious waterfront villa in the Caribbean as some of our customers have asked/ thought. Do get to sleep in past 5am though so that's a plus.
Having said all this, November is also the last Newsetter until spring 2013. Please hold back the tears...or was that "Hoorahs"!... I NEED a break and time to re-generate my little brain! So, Thanks for listening to my sometimes/ oftentimes "babble" and hope that maybe some of what I uttered was in some ways helpful. Be back in the spring to again torment you all! ....I Hope!
Ken
PS. Remember, we will still be around in the event you do need
something. Just give a shout ahead of time.
