Some major relief state-wide and some minor relief county-wide but not here at the Nursery! All of the monthly rains have gone just a few short miles to the north of us or a few short miles to the south of us. Good thing it's fall and plants are needing less water as our irrigation lakes are WAY down. The more recent rains this past week ( since the 25th ) should help lighten up the color scheme on October's map. Let's Hope Anyway!

Stuff to Ponder

Well, if you look around a bit it appears that Autumn is already upon us.
Just like everything else this year it is a bit ahead of schedule but as I have said before and am constantly reminded by a friend of mine "Ma Nature is a pretty big operation"! Yep, the trees and shrubs are already starting to turn their reds and yellows and purples and oranges. The colors should prove to be even more majestic this year with the earlier drought and now some early fall rains. So...Time to get out with the camera or just get out and enjoy the incredible beauty of fall. If you are interested in WHY trees turn the colors they do, you can go to our Archive link above and read all about it in our October 2011 Newsletter or just click here and read the article titled "It's Autumn, What's Going On". You can also find some great fall photos in that edition.
So, take a peek...no ones's watching.....

It's also time to put down that last little bit of pre-emergent. But we're going into winter you say and all the weeds will be gone.  Wrong! Ever remember seeing your flower beds in the early, early spring? Well those seeds germinated somewhere. Somewhere that is nice and warm under all those leaves you didn't get to rake up or under all that snow we had or might have. So, go ahead and sprinkle your Preen or Treflan down and, again, make sure it is watered in good. We normally get a bunch of late fall rains so try to pick an appropriate day and save yourself the labor of draggin out the hose. Remember: We sell 40 lb. bags of Treflan here at the nursery and it's quite a bit cheaper than Preen.

As I said last month Fall is probably the absolute best time of year to plant trees. They are going dormant for the winter so you won't need to worry much about watering. And, the ground is still warm enough to make them want to root in a bit before the really cold stuff comes. So, bring your truck and come pick out some great trees to plant. Then you can sit back and watch them bloom in the spring.

It's also getting time to plant your bulbs for a show of colors next spring. If you have squirrels around you may want to dip your bulbs in liquid "Plantskydd" prior to planting or you can sprinkle the granular in and on top the soil to discourage squirrels and others from digging up all your hard work. Plantskydd has been tested and proven to be the #1 Most Effective and #1 Longest Lasting repellant on the market. It is a100% organic repellant that not only works for deer but also for all those smaller chewing, digging, knawing critters. Remember: Plantskydd is available for sale here at the nursery.

Don't forget: October 15th is the kinda, sort of, the cut-off date for sowing grass seed. It needs time to germinate and grow before the cold weather hits. And, with everything being "ahead of schedule" this year.....hmmmm

Also, Don't forget: Do Not prune anything now! Wait until after you are sure you had a couple of Hard frosts and things are going dormant ( dropping leaves is a good sign ) before chopping on them. You do not want your plants to start putting on new growth and then get zapped by the cold.

And, don't forget to batten down the hatches to keep the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug from coming in and over-wintering in your walls etc. ...YUK!
You can also read more about this guy/gal in the same October issue linked above.
