2013 Featured Juried Artist of the Month
Art Biography
Dan Urish, Wickford Rhode Island

I have always had a love of drawing. I started with pen and ink, which evolved much more naturally from my background of engineering drawing, inspired by the great pen and ink drawings of the local artist Margie Vogel, who some 15 years ago, generously took me under her tutorship, introducing me to the many media of art. Since then, after study with many more instructors of the Newport Art Museum, the Lyme Art Association and the Wickford Art Association of which I am an "elected member", I continue the wonder of immersion in artistic expression in many forms.
In addition to my detailed renderings of landscapes and seascapes, flowers have been one of my favorite subjects to paint with their wonderful, beautiful detail. While always enamored of the inherent beauty of flowers, I learned to distinguish with new fascination the extraordinary variations in leaves, petals, stamens and pistils. In this I was fortunate to have a wonderful mentor in the person of renowned South County botanical painter, Francis Topping, who taught me appropriate watercolor techniques for botanical painting, but also the appreciation of observation to gain the feeling for what I was trying to paint.
My artwork has been exhibited and sold at the Newport Art Museum, the Lyme Art Association, the Wickford Art Association, the Gilbert Stuart Museum, the Navy Seabee Museum of California, and locally at the Voila Art Studio of Wickford.

Special Members' Meeting
Wednesday October 9th, 7pm
WAA President Judith Anderson, as well as the Executive Building Committee, would like to share with you the schematic design plans for a building expansion of our gallery that would have classrooms, more gallery space and much more. We will go over the conceptual designs with you and answer your questions.
The gallery has long needed more space for classes, offices and to be able to house more exhibits. We have committee members from among the Association who are working with the architect to design the space to maximize its potential.
We look forward to sharing these idea's with you as we move forward on the project.

I'd like to invite Wickford Art Association members to join in the drawing display at the library. It is open to everyone but I thought it would be fun if several member artists participated and interesting to see what we come up with using limited materials.
Drawing is for Everyone!
Everyone is invited to come to the North Kingstown Free Library and make a drawing or a doodle and add it to our art display. During the month of October all library visitors have the opportunity to have their artwork hung up for display. The library will provide paper and simple tools--crayons and colored pencils. We encourage artists and doodlers to work outside on the library grounds, inside in the Young Readers' Department or even to bring their paper home and return a finished drawing to be hung. Don't worry about your drawing being "good", just have fun! Everybody can draw! The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 8:30pm. Friday and Saturday the library is open from 9am to 5pm.
