This beginner 2-day workshop emphasizes the fundamentals of portraiture. Pencil, charcoal, and
monochromatic pastel will be used to create works of art and also capture a likeness of the
individual. After the initial lesson of basic portraiture, art students will receive individual instruction
while working from their personal photographs.
Balance and composition along with value techniques will be included in the portraiture lessons.
All levels are welcome. No prior experience in portrait drawing is needed. This class is beneficial to
anyone interested in drawing portraits including students who plan to complete portfolio
requirements including self- portraits.
Materials List: Drawing pencil, Charcoal pencil, Kneaded eraser, Hand held pencil sharpener,
Drawing board and easel, paper, Exacto-knife (or blade for trimming hard pastels); Variety of
pastels: Hard pastels such as NuPastels, Soft pastels, pastel pencils. There will be some supplies for
sale if needed: 2B drawing pencils, kneaded erasers, charcoal pencils and Canson Mi-Teintes
pastel paper.
