Daniels Training Services
September 2015

September kept me busy with Onsite Training.  It required lots of travel to the West Coast, which is fine with me.  Early October brought my wife and I to Key West, Florida for some business - and some vacation.
But it's back to work in the Midwest now and I have several Webinars coming up:  all the work without the travel.  I also had time to provide an educational session for the annual meeting of a professional organization.  In this newsletter is an article that explains what I did with that presentation and how it can be useful to you.
A Corrosive Hazardous Material

HazMat Label Specifications

You're probably aware not just any sticker will suffice if it's going to function as a HazMat Label per the regulations of the USDOT.  However, you may be surprised - I know I was - to learn the extent of the specifications in the Hazardous Materials Regulations for HazMat Labels.  The requirements for background color, font color and size, dimensions, proportions, and more are at 49 CFR 172.407 but with flexibility built into the regulations to allow for some variability.  Make sure you know the specifications for HazMat Labels and then make sure your HazMat Labels meet them.

What's a Generator to do About its Cradle-to-Grave Responsibility?

This one's from December of 2014.  And while it is short on technical data, it's filled with helpful suggestions about what you can do to minimize the long-term liability you face every time you ship a hazardous waste off-site for disposal.  Take a few moments and learn some good practices that will pay off down the road.  More...

Sometimes a Power Point presentation is better than an article for summarizing complex regulations.  Take a look at mine on SlideShare.

What's Coming Down the Pipeline for September?

The Regulatory Pipeline

Nothing much - that I can see - from PHMSA, FRA, or FMCSA.  And nothing from FAA.  But something with the potential for enormous impact from the USEPA.  It's huge!  USEPA is proposing changes - they refer to them as improvements - to the regulations applicable to hazardous waste generators.  You can read more (a little more) about the proposed Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule in an article elsewhere in this newsletter.  But be sure to follow this link to every new rule, proposed rule, or notice from the regulatory agencies that impact your business.  Federal Register Publications for September 2015.

CESQG Hazardous Waste USEPA Proposed Rule: Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule

This will be big!  Read this short summary to learn what the USEPA is proposing to do to the hazardous waste generator regulations - Part 262! Part 261! - that we've all come to know and love so well.  Mostly they are minor revisions and corrections but some, like the addition of regulations for episodic generator status and the allowance of CESQGs to consolidate hazardous waste from non-contiguous locations, could have a significant impact.  Add to that the fact that when final these Federal regulations will be subject to further revisions by the States and you have a recipe for years of regulatory confusion.

Cargo Tank Motor Vehicle with ID Number 2218 Requirements of the Hazardous Material Regulations for Shippers of HazMat

This was an educational presentation I gave at the MRA Safety Conference in Moline, IL on October 2, 2015.  But it's more than just some slides for you to flip through.  Using the features of Office Mix in Power Point I was able to turn it into an animated & narrated presentation complete with simple quizzes throughout to ensure comprehension.  If you can't sit through the entire 56 minutes, just return to it when you can.  I encourage you to take a look.  You're sure to learn something about the Hazardous Material Regulations.  More...
