Daniels Training Services

October 2011

Greetings!

The inspiration for the articles in my newsletters come from questions I am asked during  my training events.  As you can see, the questions I have received lately have been skewed more towards the US DOT HazMat regulations then they have the US EPA hazardous waste regulations. My favorite questions are the ones that force me to research the regulations and thereby gain a better understanding of them.  I hope you are able to benefit from the information in this newsletter, and I hope to see you at one of my upcoming training events.

Handling Universal Waste

If you generate any of the following wastes:  lamps or bulbs, batteries, or mercury-containing devices (thermostats, thermometers, etc...)  You should become familiar with the regulations crafted especially for their management and disposal.More...

Who is Responsible to Provide Placards for a HazMat Shipment?

Whether you offer for shipment a hazardous material as a product or a hazardous waste, you are considered to be a Shipper per US DOT regulations.  The requirement of the Shipper to provide placards to the Carrier is only one of your many regulatory responsibilities. More...

The Materials of Trade Exception to the Hazardous Materials Regulations

It's a question that has been asked many times during my training events, "May I or an employee transport small amounts of hazardous materials over public roadways without shipping papers, and other requirements of the HMR?"  The short answer:  "Yes".  The long answer:  Here.

Selecting a Carrier for your Hazardous Materials

Perhaps you have used the same Carrier to transport your hazardous materials for years.  Perhaps you are considering a new provider for this service.  Either way, you may find this article helpful in identifying what you need to ask potential vendors.

Sometimes a Proper Shipping Name Just isn't Enough

Many of the proper shipping names in the Hazardous Materials Table do not adequately describe the hazards of the material to be shipped.  If the letter 'G' appears in column 1 of the HMT for your HazMat, you need to know what is required of you.  More...

A Q&A on the Transportation of Samples

This was a tough article to write.  I finally received the inspiration to format the topic in a question and answer session.  You tell me if you think I did a good job in explaining both the US EPA and US DOT exclusions for the on-site handling and off-site shipment of hazardous waste and/or HazMat.

If given an opportunity, I usually choose to drive to the location of my next training event instead of flying.  Flying has its advantages, but for me, they can't beat the freedom of travelling on my own schedule.  My priority is always to be in the locations that any potential customers may need me.  If you don't see a time and location convenient for you below, check out my website for my full schedule.  Or, contact me to see if we can't make some other arrangements.
