August 2011

Greetings!

August has been a busy month for me, but a good one.  I have held successful training events in Hartford, CT and St. Louis, MO and still have Lansing, MI and Columbia, SC to look forward to.  I have enjoyed training others and learning from them about their experiences with EPA and DOT regulations.  The content below largely comes from questions asked during training.  I hope this information may be of use to you.

Modifying the Proper Shipping Name for Hazardous Waste Shipments

During generation, handling, and accumulation on-site, hazardous waste is subject only to State and Federal environmental regulations.  However, when preparing for off-site shipment the regulations of the US DOT are applicable as when.  A document such as the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest fulfills the requirements of both the EPA and the DOT.  Did you ever wonder about the regulatory citation that requires the addition of the word "Waste" at the beginning of the proper shipping name for hazardous waste shipments?  More...

I'm honored to have been selected as a featured speaker at the IISC's 25th Annual Environmental Conference and Expo.  It's being held in the iWireless Center in Moline, IL on the 13th of October.  I will be presenting on the determination and requirements of hazardous waste generators.  If you see me there, mention this article to receive a free gift.

Do you have a DOT Security Plan?

49 CFR 172.800(b) contains the applicability determination for the DOT Security Plan and the related In-Depth Security Training.  Please take this shortsurvey to see if these recently revised regulations apply to you.

To comma or not to comma?

In all my years of experience with hazardous material shipping papers - including the hazardous waste manifest - there was one thing I was certain of:  Each element of the basic description (identification number, proper shipping name, hazard class, and packing group) must be separated by a comma.  I believed you could be fined for each missing comma if inspected.  A little research revealed great regulatory flexibility on the matter of punctuation, but reinforced the importance of communication.  More....

Training Photo 4I've experienced a lot since I left my former employer and started this business in November of 2010.  I've traveled all over the country and met many different people.  The travel can be a bit of a grind when all I see of a city is the airport and the hotel.  What I continue to enjoy is the interaction with fellow EHS professionals as we share a day of learning about the regulations.  I hope you are able to join me at one of my upcoming events.
