Dear Families,

For many students at Our Lady of Peace, athletics is a part of their week-to-week schedule. Some may think that a student's involvement in sports could be a hindrance to his or her academic performance.

The research actually shows otherwise.

Students who are involved in athletics:

• Do better in school
• Are more motivated to do well in the classroom, especially in the higher grades where poor academic performance can keep them from participating with the team
• Learn responsibility and time management skills
• Have a higher self esteem
• Learn how to connect with adults and receive support and encouragement from their coach

Whether or not your child or grandchild participates in an OLP sport, athletics makes an impact on the entire school and church community. All the students experience a stronger school spirit by cheering on their friends and classmates, hosting PEP rallies, and building school pride.

We have all heard the popular phrase, "There is no 'I' in team." The OLP Athletic Board is taking that saying to heart and asking for your support. Here are just a few of the estimated expenses that the OLP athletic program will have this upcoming year:

• Referee Fees-$4,000
• Uniforms-between $8,000 and $10,000 as five teams need new uniforms this year
• Equipment, supplies, and rentals-$5,000 for football equipment, soccer nets, renting pool time, etc.
• Tournament entry fees-$4,000

To cover these costs, many fundraisers occur throughout the year. These fundraisers take up valuable time from our coaches and families, many of whom are already volunteering their time to work with our students in athletics. The OLP Athletic Board is hoping to eliminate many of these fundraisers-and ideally the participation fee currently paid by families whose children participate in sports-with one BIG fundraiser.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Until May 31, 2015, lottery tickets will be available for $10 each both in the school office and the church office. The tickets are based on the Pennsylvania Big 4 Evening Lottery. From June 1st to June 30th, there is a DAILY winner and a maximum prize of $1,500. For only $10, you can support OLP Athletics and have 30 chances to win! Please join our team by supporting this OLP athletics fundraiser. The deadline is May 31^st so don't wait!
