Book Fair Parent Letter

The Our Lady of Peace Library will be sponsoring a Summer Reading Contest for the summer of 2014. The goal is to have every student of Our Lady of Peace read at least 5 books over the summer break.

At the end of the school year, a form will be sent home with each student in grades Kindergarten thru 7.  The title of every book must be written on the form with a parent's signature and returned to the library the first week of the 2014/2015 school year. If Our Lady of Peace students read 1,500 books over the summer, every student will receive a popscicle on a day in September designated by Ms. Ek. If 2,000 books are read, every student will receive an ice cream treat, and if 2,500 books are read, then each student will receive both (on 2 different designated days).   Miss Ek will also reward each student who reads double their goal (10 books) a dress down day!

In order to help kick off the first ever school wide summer reading program the library will be hosting a Buy One get One Free Book Fair next week. For every book purchased another of equal or lesser value will be free. This is an excellent opportunity to help our parents and students acquire quality books for discounted prices. This also benefits our teachers. Six teachers will be chosen (by chance) to receive $50 worth of items from the Scholastic Resource Catalog. Please be aware that we are only making books available, NO POSTERS OR OTHER ITEMS will be sold.

Please send in cash or checks made out to
Our Lady of Peace in an envelope marked with your student's name and homeroom.

We are in need of volunteers to help work the book fair. If you are willing and able, please contact Mrs. Hill at Bhill@olpcrusaders.org or call the school 838-3548 and leave a message.

Thank you in advance for supporting our summer reading program!

Summer Opportunities

Penn State Behrend Girl's Basketball Camps

IU5 Camps

The IU is offering two student summer camps this year!

Returning for an encore performance, and at a high demand, is ProBots Apprentices.  This program will introduce your students (ages 10 - 15) to the basics of programming and robotics utilizing the Scratch and SNAP programming languages and the BirdBrain Technologies of the Finch and Hummingbird.

New this year and highly requested by last year's ProBots alumni is a second level to ProBots titled ProBots Explorers.  Students (ages 10 - 15) will develop an understanding of intermediate and advanced programming concepts utilizing a micro-controller board and the Arduino programming language to build an interactive object that involves switches, sensors, lights, motors, and servos.

The remaining student summer program is ConstrX.  There are two age bands for this student program, 8 to 11 and 12 to 15 years of age.  Combining arts and technology, these students will apply their creativity to solve wacky and exciting challenges.  A potpourri of scavenged and recycled materials will be supplied.  Through tinkering, your students will engineer and fabricate an end product of their own creation.

The application and Student Summer Camp Flyer is in the link above. Students may register for both ProBots and ConstrX on the same application.
