Safe and Caring School

The Safe and Caring Schools theme for October is " Discovering Our Feelings."  Empathy and the ability to communicate effectively are key qualities children need in order to get along with others. Before we teach them to be assertive, children should recognize the causes and effects of negative attitudes and behaviors.  They need to realize they have the power to choose how to respond to conflict.  Being "emotionally fit" helps children face daily challenges in positive ways.

Students will

*identify and express their feelings appropriately through interactive activities and role play

*learn two strategies, I Messages and Stop, Think, Choose, to help them resolve conflicts in positive ways

The OLP Caring Crusaders for September are

Chris Beres - Grade 1B

Karly Labonte - Grade 3B

Tori Sandstrom - Grade 7A

Dress Down Tomorrow

Eighteen year old Alyssa Josephine O'Neill, sister of OLP 4 year old preschool student, Jase O'Neill, died suddenly on September 4, 2013, from an epileptic seizure, but her parents have found a way to keep the memory of their oldest daughter alive.

It's a story that centers around coffee and paying it forward.  You may have seen it on the news and throughout social media.  The #ajo has now made its appearance in many countries around the world to raise awareness for epilepsy.

OLP will donate all of the money collected tomorrow, October 9, 2013, from our monthly dress down day to epilepsy in honor of #ajo.  You can dress down in purple, the color for epilepsy awareness, if you wish, for any amount of money you would like to donate.

P.L.A.Y. Basketball League

Yes,  you are reading this right, P.L.A.Y. "Parochial League at the Y."

OLP and most other Erie schools in the diocese have made the decision to participate in a new basketball league run through the YMCA.  OLP's participation in this league will replace that of the CLAY league.

OLP families with boys and girls in grades 1-4 are invited to participate in this new league. We will be using the same rules as the previous CLAY league, focusing on player development.  Grades 1-2 will play on an 8 ft. hoop and be co-ed.  Grades 3-4 will play on a 10 ft. hoop and have separate teams boys and girls. This is a great opportunity for students to play and compete together with their classmates.

Games will be played each Saturday beginning January 4th and conclude March 8th (8 weeks reg season, 2 weeks playoffs).  All games will be played at the Downtown YMCA, with the hope to have the last games played on a university or professional court (we'll keep you posted).  Game schedules will be distributed by Dec. 20th.  Practices will begin as soon as we have teams and coaches.

Sign-ups for teams and volunteer coaches will be held later in October in the OLP Cafeteria and the cost is $50 per player.  Our team rosters have to be submitted by November 1st.  This is not an OLP athletic sponsored sport so we rely heavily on volunteer coaches. We cannot have teams without you.  The coaches meeting will be held November 9th.

Additional information will follow this communication with sign-up forms and dates.  Until then, if you have any questions, please reach out to Kurt Spence at kurtspence@hotmail.com.
