Safe and Caring School

The Safe and Caring Schools theme for October is " Discovering Our Feelings."  Empathy and the ability to communicate effectively are key qualities children need in order to get along with others. Before we teach them to be assertive, children should recognize the causes and effects of negative attitudes and behaviors.  They need to realize they have the power to choose how to respond to conflict.  Being "emotionally fit" helps children face daily challenges in positive ways.

Students will

*identify and express their feelings appropriately through interactive activities and role play

*learn two strategies, I Messages and Stop, Think, Choose, to help them resolve conflicts in positive ways

Parking Lot in front of the School and the Statue of Saint Francis (rain or shine)

Our Lady of Peace School and Parish welcomes The Most Rev. Lawrence T. Persico, J.C.L., Bishop of Erie, at our annual Blessing of Pets on Friday, October 4, 2012, at 2:00 p.m.  The prayer service and blessing will take place in front of the school in front of the statue of Saint Francis (rain or shine).  We ask students, who wish to have their pets (dogs, cats, birds, lizard, horses, etc.) blessed, ask their parents to bring their pets to the blessing. We ask that the parents who bring pets meet their children on the parking lot as they come out of the main entrance with their classes. If parents cannot attend, their children may bring a photograph or drawing of their pet to be blessed.  Students whose parents are not able to attend should stay with their class's homeroom teacher.  If, after the blessing, parents wish to take their children home with them they may do so, but must send a note to your child's homeroom teacher (for each child) to let them know.  This is important as this will allow the homeroom teacher to make sure that your child is prepared to go home before they go to the parking lot. (Students may only leave early if their own parents or legal guardians take them and they have given a note to their homeroom teacher.  Students will not be permitted to go home with another student's parent, unless this is a traditional daily routine, and this should be stated in the note from the child's parent.  Thank you for your complete cooperation in this.)  If going home with parents, students should take their book bags, etc. with them to the blessing. Do not place on the ground outside for obvious reasons.  We ask that you do not park in front of the school as that is where people will be gathering.  Please park on the parking lot west of the gym or east of the school. Thanks for your cooperation. Students not leaving with parents after the blessing will be dismissed at the regular time.

October Dress Down

Eighteen year old Alyssa Josephine O'Neill, sister of OLP 4 year old preschool student, Jase O'Neill, died suddenly on September 4, 2013, from an epileptic seizure, but her parents have found a way to keep the memory of their oldest daughter alive.

It's a story that centers around coffee and paying it forward.  You may have seen it on the news and throughout social media.  The #ajo has now made its appearance in many countries around the world to raise awareness for epilepsy.

OLP will donate all of the money collected on October 9, 2013, from our monthly dress down day to epilepsy in honor of #ajo.  You can dress down in purple, the color for epilepsy awareness, if you wish, for any amount of money you would like to donate.

OLP 7th & 8th Grade Youth Group
7th & 8th grade parents & students, I am very excited & pleased to announce that the rumors are true! I will be chairing youth group for the 2013-14 school year. So if you have a 7th or 8th grade student interested in joining this fun group for lots of super events & spiritual learning that runs year long, please see the attachments. One is a letter explaining activities and requirements in more detail. The other two attachments are forms you will need to fill out and send by October 12, 2013. Please place them in an envelope and mark them "Youth Group", and send them to Trevor Barto, 8B.
In the letter you will see information regarding parent involvement, which is CRUCIAL in keeping this group alive and thriving. I am planning for the first monthly meeting to be this Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., in the upstairs Science Lab. This is a parent only meeting to discuss agenda for upcoming events. I am also in need of a few volunteers to assist throughout the year. The most important one seems to be a treasurer; last year's very well organized binder has been passed onto me for this by Deb Maciak. Other areas of involvement will be discussed at this Thursday's meeting. So if you are able to help out with treasury or just give a little time in other areas, please join us! You can also contact me, Brenda Barto, at chuckybrenda@verizon.net or call me at 823-5670 with any questions.
