HHS Mandate

As you know, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Affordable Care Act, continues to demand coverage of sterilization, contraception and abortion-causing drugs as women's preventative services.

Though churches themselves are exempted from the mandate by the narrowest of definitions, religious ministries of service - such as charities, schools, health care facilities and institutions of higher education - may be given, at best, second-class status under the law in the form of a still-murky "accommodation."

As it stands the HHS mandate ignores our nation's foundational freedoms of conscience and religion. The Church and its ministries have been told that we can call ourselves Catholic; we just can't act like we are.

As religious employers our mission is threatened by these regulations. I strongly encourage you, your employees and the people you serve to speak out in favor of religious liberty and demand that this rule be rescinded. Public comment in reaction to this advance notice is permitted on or before April 8, 2013.

Catholics must send a strong clear message that we will not stand for a violation of our religious freedom. Your comments are needed. Even if you submitted comments in the past, you should do so again. You can follow the simple steps for submitting pre-written, editable comments directly to HHS and Congressional representatives using the Catholic Advocacy Network at www.pacatholic.org. <https://www.votervoice.net/PACC/Campaigns/30694/Respond>

Click on "Take Action: HHS Mandate" for more details and easy-to-follow steps. If you decide to submit comments in another format, please feel to use the points listed online at www.pacatholic.org <https://www.votervoice.net/PACC/Campaigns/30694/Respond>  and encourage your employees and the people you serve to take action as well at www.pacatholic.org <https://www.votervoice.net/PACC/Campaigns/30694/Respond> . We must respond to this egregious infringement of liberty with one loud voice. Finally, please pray for a resolution to this critical matter.

Sincerely,
Robert J. O'Hara, Jr.

ImPACT Testing
OLP is currently implementing an innovative program for our student-athletes. This program will assist our coaches/family physicians in evaluating and treating head injuries. In order to better manage concussions sustained by our athletes, we have acquired a software tool called ImPACT. ( Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) ImPACT is a computerized exam utilized in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports program across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help determine the severity of the head injury and when the injury has fully healed.

All of our athletes in involved in high impact sports will be tested once a year. Our basketball teams were tested in the fall and now we will complete the test on all of our students participating in soccer. The ImPACT test is a preseason physical of the brain. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration.  We are excited to implement this program given that it provides us with the best available information for managing concussions and preventing potential brain damage that can occur with multiple concussions.

The OLP administration, coaching, and athletic board are striving to keep your child's health and safety at the forefront of the student  athlete experience.

Thank you,
Stacey Constable
