LeaderShape 2013

Three Dougherty Scholars joined almost 70 other community college students at the ASU West Campus for the 2013 LeaderShape Program.

From Left:  Danny Valenzuela, Randall Fields, Cathy Eden, Vanessa Sanders and Nicole Stakebake

We received the following  notes from Randall and Vanessa describing their experiences:

"This is Vanessa Sanders from Estrella Mountain Community College.  First and foremost, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend LeaderShape.  I spent five nights and six days on ASU West Campus and participated in various team building activities.  LeaderShape is intense because you are given a lot of information in a short time frame;  it's a challenge to process all of the information.  Overall, it was a positive experience, it gave me a new way of looking at myself and how I can impact others.  I recommend that the Dougherty Foundation keep sending students to LeaderShape because it's a good opportunity for students to meet new people and evaluate themselves as a person".    - Vanessa Sanders

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime.  I found the LeaderShape program to be a challenge that I would recommend everyone experience at least once.  During the time I was in the program, I found out how to find a vision for myself and how to build stretch goals that will accomplish small portions of that vision.  Besides finding our vision and stretch goals it also taught us about ourselves.  The program taught me what was holding me back from becoming a better leader and how to resolve those problems. This week was a hard week, but a fun one.

It is a program that teaches leadership in a way that

I have not seen before".                   - Randall Fields

The Dougherty Foundation would like to thank SCF Arizona for providing the funding for these LeaderShape scholarships.

I'd also like to thank Diana Martinez and Genesis Toole at Phoenix College for their roll in processing these scholarships for us.                                                     - Linda Czarnecki

Student Spotlight
Robert Nolan

Robert Nolan is a Dougherty Scholar at Phoenix College.  His studies aren't limited to PC though; he also takes classes at ASU and Glendale Community College towards his degree in Languages and Culture - Asian Languages - Japanese.  When he's not in class, studying or working he shares his knowledge of martial arts with PC students as the captain of the Judo Club at PC.

This summer, Robert travelled to Japan as a result of a grant given to his class at Glendale Community College by the Japan Foundation.

Robert Nolan

"Between the dates May 10, 2013 and May 19, 2013, I spent  time in Japan to do cultural and linguistics studies as part of my class at GCC.  During this time, I travelled far and gained new experiences.  I had the honor of being able to indulge a great many of my interests; among them was my study of Judo and Buddhism.  I was able to reconnect with my ASU instructor of Japanese 101, Mr. Ayed Hasian, who now teaches English in Osaka.   On my free day, I practiced Judo at the Kodokan in Tokyo.  We made several trips to various shrines and temples during our stay.  The many gates, guardians and figures in Japanese art museums and around the country are proof of the lasting impact Buddhism has had on the Japanese culture" .             - Robert Nolan

Questions & Answers

Q:  I have transferred to a different school.  Do I have to reapply at my new school?

A:  Yes, you must reapply at the new school and provide a copy of your transcripts.  If you're now at a university, our program is half loan (mandatory) and half scholarship for full time students.  Loan paperwork is required.
