The Dougherty Foundation
Annual Luncheon

The Dougherty Foundation Luncheon celebrating 59 years of assisting Arizona students was held at the Flinn Foundation in April. Three of our current students were guest speakers. They shared their inspiring personal stories of their educational journeys with those in attendance.
Melissa Bocconcelli joined us from Estrella Mountain Community College where she is an honor student and member of Beta Alpha Xi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She is mom to an 8 year old daughter and a Math tutor to 80 4th, 5th & 6th grade students in the Peoria Unified School District. Melissa is transferring to ASU West this fall and her goal is to teach 7th or 8th grade Social Studies.

Celebrating Excellence
at
Estrella Mountain CC

Estrella Mountain Community College sponsored its sixteenth annual scholarship luncheon on May 3rd. In attendance were Dougherty scholars and several members from the Dougherty board.
Currently, the Dougherty Foundation funds fourteen general scholarships, plus an additional two for students focusing on an Education major. Also, Dougherty participates in the college's "I Start Smart" program, funding eleven students. As these students matriculate into the general curriculum each will be eligible to apply for continued assistance from Dougherty scholarships.

This is Dougherty's fourteenth year of supporting EMCC with scholarship funding for students. Attending the luncheon representing Dougherty were Linda Czarnecki, Mary Martha Prince and Jack LaSota.
We extend our appreciation to Paul Gonzales for organizing the event; a good time was had by all.

Heroes of Education

The Maricopa Community Colleges and the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation announced the inaugural class of College Heroes at its Annual Recognition Dinner on April 25, 2013. The Dougherty Foundation was nominated for this honor by Glendale Community College. Trustee Jim Walsh received the plaque accompanied by GCC President Irene Kovala. The other inductees included Mike McAfee, Ken and Rebecca Boren, Boeing, Hispanic Leadership Forum del Oeste, Ivan Johnson, Peggy Neeley, Bob Howell, Art DeCabooter and Verna McClain. This new honor recognizes both individuals and organizations who have "distinguished themselves by providing exceptional support and/or service.." The annual dinner was very well attended and honored Edmundo Hidalgo, President and CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., as the 2013 Hero of Education. Mr. Hidalgo is the Immediate Past Chair of the MCC Foundation Board. The highlight of the evening were the videotaped and live remarks by various scholarship recipients who inspired us all by their stories of hope and achievement. -- Jim Walsh

Q: I was supposed to graduate this month but will now graduate in December. What should I do now?
A: Two things, first contact me and give me your new graduation date. Second, you may apply for aid for your last semester if you still meet our requirements.
