Each year we receive letters from students describing their goals and aspirations. We appreciate the time and effort these students spend putting their thoughts on paper. Their words of gratitude are heartfelt and give those of us here at the foundation a deeper appreciation for the gift of being able to continue the legacy left by M.J. and Bess Dougherty. We recently received the following two letters. We thank Kieran and Brian for allowing us to share their letters with our readers.

" In the academic year of 2011-2012, I was able to narrow down what I would to specialize in within the field of science. Before, my goal in life was to receive a Masters in Marine Biology, but after taking a few key classes at the U of A, I have finally found the academic path that that I would like to achieve. In the fall of 2011, I took a class on mammalian vertebrate species. We spent time on mammals that are endemic to the desert region of Arizona. Next, I took the Sonoran Desert Discovery class and did

outreach to the public and K-12 students. Learning a vast amount about the Sonoran Desert made me realize that my interest lies in desert ecology and I have chosen to pursue a Masters or Doctorate in Desert Ecology. I will be preceptor for a introductory biology class this year to become more comfortable with teaching and I will also be aiding in desert ecology outreach classes. In addition to my academic activities, I am a guide dog pet-sitter with Paws for the Cause.
The Dougherty Foundation has awarded me scholarships and loans for the past three years and has been very beneficial in helping me pay for school necessities. Thank you for offering me the opportunity for this scholarship/loan for another year."

"Thank you for the last two years of loans you have granted me to help meet financial responsibilities while aiming to become a pharmacist. My course of study has remained the same. I have finished my second of four years for the Doctorate of Pharmacy program at the University of Arizona.
My future goals continue to expand and become tweaked by my activities and accomplishments of the past years. I separate my goals into different spheres, many of which overlap. In my family sphere, my wife and I have been blessed with a baby girl born this January; my goals are to continue to be a loving and supporting husband and a good father to my new daughter and now seven year old son. In my self-education sphere, my

goals are to complete the pharmacy program while maximizing exposure to different aspects of the field and continuing to keep up my grades. In my educating sphere, I had the pleasure of volunteer-teaching at my son's school this last year. I taught the middle school grades science lab, art and economics. Also in my educating sphere, my church continues to use me to teach Bible class on Sunday mornings. If I can get some open time between all of the above, in the short range future, I am hoping to learn trombone--I have one purchased now along with a lesson book--and to continue my own artwork.
My financial need comes as I continue to have to take out large student loans to accomplish these current goals. The responsibilities I have to my family -- food, clothing, mortgage, utilities -- continue. The Dougherty Foundation loan helps meet these responsibilities. Thank you for considering me for another loan, and thank you again for the help you have already given."
