March is
Youth Art Month

How will you
celebrate it?

As art teachers, we are responsible for advocating why students and school districts will benefit
from art education. By celebrating Youth Art Month and being an advocate for art education, school districts and communities will view art as an essential component of a well rounded education.
Partnering with the community will provide art teachers with the necessary community support to continue art education programming within their school district. It is my hope that art teachers nationally can unite to celebrate Youth Art Month and that school leaders and the community will see the importance and relevance of art, both in school and in students' individual lives. Please feel free to contact me if you need any assistance celebrating Youth Art Month!

The 2015 NAEA National Convention will be held March 26-28 in New Orleans, Louisiana
at the New Orleans Convention Center and Hilton New Orleans Riverside.

Artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn create community art by painting entire neighborhoods, and involving those who live there - from the favelas of Rio to the streets of Philadelphia. What's made their projects succeed?
In this funny and inspiring talk, the artists explain their art-first approach - and the importance of a neighborhood barbecue
Learning by Design is still looking for lessons that include wearable art using recycled, altered, non-traditional, or re-purposed materials.

OPEN to RISKS -
Exiting the Comfort Zone

Diane Wilkin -PAEA president

Who in their right mind would put plaster on their face?

I had to stretch out of my comfort zone for this one and ask my students to do the same - face those fears and enter the no-talk, no-sight zone for ten minutes. Be open to risks - those scary, new things that we've never done before.   It seems like it's happening a lot right now, both in class and out. I look forward to serving as the PAEA President for the next two years, and hope to meet and work with many of you as we take risks, make changes, and continue to grow and re-design ourselves into the future.

PAEA is already moving out of the comfort zone!

  • Conference 2014 was unique in its locale and structure offering a full half day at Fallingwater where members could meander at their leisure. KUDOS to the team!
  • The Learning By Design group has organized an up-cycling event, gathered lesson plans, and created a magazine of information and resources for art educators. SHARING!
  • SLO informational training sessions were performed this past fall by PAEA members both online and at several locations across Pennsylvania. MEETING NEEDS!

There's more too!

  • Web design and update has begun.
  • Youth Art Month deadlines are approaching! Deliver work by Friday, February 13th.
  • Local Representatives are planning events.
  • Project Innovate has a spring challenge - April 18th
  • Conference 2015 work is underway for Harrisburg in the fall.

Can you take a risk and step outside of your comfort zone?

  • Contact your region representative, and volunteer to help with an event or activity...
    • Region 5 needs a representative:  Beaver, Butler, Mercer and Lawrence Counties
    • Region 8 needs a representative:  Bedford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union Counties
    • E-mail PAEA with a suggestion for professional development or another new idea.  http://www.paeablog.org/contact-us/
    • Join a special issues group that is relevant to you and your teaching. Lots of ideas are shared online.

Where do you see yourself involved?

It's time to be OPEN to RISKS and Exit the Comfort Zone! I look forward to learning more about you, your needs, and serving you through 2016. Let's get started!

Art Is Natural Conference 2014

Joy Knepp - Conference Chair and Region 6 Representative

The Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania, was the perfect backdrop for the 2014 PAEA "Art is Natural" Conference held October 30 - November 2. The conference was held at  Seven Springs Resort and included a trip to Fallingwater in nearby Mill Run.

PAEA members, Jess Souchik,
Sandy Corson and Amy Migliore enjoy the beauty of Fallingwater.
More than 200 art educators spent three days immersed in enlightening workshops, creative endeavors, collaboration opportunities, and meaningful professional development activities. Some of the highlights included several inspiring keynote speakers. Christina Thompson from Penn State University spoke about choice-based and collaborative practices in art education on Friday afternoon. On Saturday we heard from Andrew Phillips, an architect and instructor at the Charter High School for Architecture + Design in Philadelphia. He shared his experiences with how a design and art curriculum can be life-changing for many urban teens that attend his school.

Saturday evening was a special treat with our keynote speaker,Bill Strickland, the CEO from the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and the Bidwell Training Center. We were in awe at how remarkable the programs are that Bill has been able to implement by overcoming incredible obstacles in making a difference in lives not only in Pittsburgh, but now in many other locations around the country and beyond. The evening itself was even more special because it followed our spectacular afternoon of touring and experiencing Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, the masterpiece of organic architecture.

During the conference, we collaborated with Rachel Sager and her amazing work with mosaic using natural materials from the earth. We g ot to know Rachel all weekend as we participated in creating a piece that will be installed at a local craft school, Touchstone Center for Crafts, in Farmington, PA.

Beyond the workshop sessions, and keynotes was time for creating and having fun. Friday evening at dinner we were led in a "Sculpture for the Head"activity with PAEA past president, Randy Granger. We also were able to create a "Natural Mask" in honor of Halloween.

This was followed by a Design Live- Challenge in the exhibit area hosted by our PAEA Learning-by-Design team. We had several teams of participants collaborate in designing a costume with recycled materials while we were serenaded by Randy Myers, the Singing Art Teacher. Our Exhibitors graciously participated as the judges for the costumes.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who made the conference such a success.
