Outstanding Art Educator of the Year 2012
Melissa Gallagher
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Melissa A. Gallagher has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Art Educator of the Year. Gallagher serves as the Art Department Chair at Carlisle High School in the Carlisle Area School District, and as PAEA board member and co-chair of the 2012 PAEA Annual conference. Judith P. Trefflinger, an art specialist colleague shares, "In her tenure as the department chairperson, Melissa has managed to keep the visual arts on the radar scope of our school board while continuously encouraging her department to step forward to take on advocacy roles within the community." |
Outstanding Retired Art Educator
Jackie Thomas The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Jackie Thomas has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Retired Art Educator. Jackie Thomas served arts education throughout her career as a Teacher, Department Chair, Principal, Acting Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. She continues enhancing arts education as an active member of the PAEA board, PAEA Distinguished Fellows, and Chair of the Clyde McGeary Scholarship Committee which supports pre-service arts education students. Thomas, most recently, was a member of the EPLC Arts Education Initiative Study Group which developed recommendations for policymakers and others arts education stakeholders in Pennsylvania. "Jackie is hardworking, conscientious, and a wealth of information," according to Kris Fontes, PAEA President. "Her knowledge of school policy in addition to her art education background made her a perfect mentor." Jackie has authored many published pieces, and is co-author of a textbook Art Image: Grade Seven, currently under contract. She is also a practicing artist and exhibits her work in fibers across Pennsylvania. She provides workshops, has designed and coordinated community weaving collaboration projects involving people of all ages and volunteers in school classrooms. Sandy Corson, a teacher at Williamsport Area School District, and PAEA Elementary Division Director says "Jackie embodies the definition of this award. Although she has retired, she continues to share her gifts and knowledge in the arts with students at every age level, her former colleagues and new teachers."

Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator
Dr. Carrie Y. Nordlund
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Dr. Carrie Y. Nordlund has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator. Nordlund is currently Assistant Professor of Art Education at Kutztown University in Kutztown, PA and is serving as Treasurer on the Executive Board for the NAEA Women's Caucus. She has had an extensive history of involvement with the NAEA Women's Caucus, and has been a presenter for the Missouri (MAEA) and Pennsylvania (PAEA) state art education associations. She was honored by the NAEA Women's Caucus in 2002 with an honorary namesake award given in her honor - The Carrie Nordlund Pre K-12 Award. While working in the field of art education, Nordlund also continues her personal artistic pursuits and has obtained several grants to support her goals. "She is a dedicated advocate for her students and for the field of art education, a serious and focused scholar in the areas of Waldorf Education, reflective teaching, and feminist pedagogy, a caring and empathic collaborator, and one of the hardest working professionals I've ever known," says Dr. Marilyn Stewart of Kutztown University. "It is not unusual for students to describe [Carrie] as 'remarkable,' 'inspiring,' 'awesome,' and 'fabulous,' indicating that her classes are 'exceptional,' 'eye-opening,' and 'challenging.'" |
Outstanding Secondary Art Educator
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Concetta M. Mattioni has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Secondary Art Educator. Mattioni teaches at Penncrest High School in the Rose Tree Media School District and is a staunch advocate for her students, motivating them to pursue their individual chosen creative pursuits. "She was the driving force behind the school's Catwalk gallery where student artworks are displayed on a rotating basis," according to Richard Gregg, the Penncrest Principal. "Concetta [also] has numerous accolades and art awards [for her personal work and these] encourage her students to reach for their own level of excellence. " Her professional strength and expertise is also demonstrated in her mentoring of pre-service art educators as a cooperating teacher for the University of Arts Art Education program. |
Outstanding Middle Level Art Educator
Kristen Tuerk
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Kris Tuerk has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Middle Level Educator. Tuerk is currently teaching at the Kutztown Middle School in the Kutztown Area School District. She is well known in the community and has organized numerous events where middle school students, college students and community members can interact. Two programs include the Festival of the Arts where Kutztown University students work with Middle School students to provide hands-on art stations as part of the annual fundraising event, and Paint the Town Gold where local business and residence owners volunteer their windows as canvases for student work. As well as collaborating outside the classroom with community members, she is an active participant as owner and operator of the "Kristen Tuerk Creative Arts Institute and Custom Picture Frame Shop." "In addition to bringing with her a warm and vivacious teaching style" says Nancy S. Brooks, "she noticeably goes above and beyond, [holding] two sessions of after school art programs, one in the spring and one in the fall." In addition to the visual arts program, Jennifer Wyland says this, "Not only does Kris have the students create artwork, but they also peer assess one another, as well as reflect and write about their personal experiences." Kristen Tuerk collaborates with others and enhances her art teaching with the natural fit of other disciplines. |
Outstanding Elementary Art Educator
Marcy Bogdanich, NBCT
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Marcy L. Bogdanich has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Elementary Art Educator. Bogdanich currently serves as an elementary art teacher in the Hampton Township School District and has achieved the National Board Certification for Early and Middle Childhood. Sarah Tambucci speaks to Marcy's professional life, "As a model for us all, she has demonstrated that passion, coupled with much hard work, and a vision for what might be, can inspire, motivate and challenge those who choose to follow in her footsteps." As an educator, she has served her district and students in many ways and gained the respect of her colleagues. "Her concern and passion for the arts extends beyond her classroom to the district, to the state and national levels" says Karen Vachon-Thaner who adds, "Marcy has helped me to become a better educator." |
Outstanding Museum Art Educator
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Wendy S. Sweigart has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Museum Art Educator. Sweigart is the Director of Outreach Education for the Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM) located in Harrisburg, PA. Wendy has also been the curator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education galleries until that position was recently eliminated. She has also served PAEA in a variety of positions which included: Conference Chairperson, Regional Representative, mini-conference coordinator, and YAM judge. At SAM Wendy has been instrumental in planning the mobile exhibits for the "Van Go!" bus program, and maintained the Art Goes to School portfolios with current and standards based lessons. According to Mary Louise Dallam, "she works tirelessly for improved public awareness and deeper understanding among the citizens of Central Pennsylvania for the role an art museum can play in the community and public schools." |
Outstanding Special Needs Art Educator
Dr. Heather Leah Ryerson Fountain
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Heather Leah Ryerson Fountain, Ph.D., has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Special Needs Art Educator. Fountain serves as Assistant Professor of Art Education at Kutztown University. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum Instruction and Art Education with a focus on differentiated instruction, chairs the Undergraduate Art Education Program at Kutztown University and has been active in designing arts and education programs which provide students of many abilities an equitable access to learning. When teaching about disabilities, Jackie Conley, a Kutztown Alumnae reports "she does not approach the subject matter from a textbook point of view; rather, she allows the students to experience it first-hand by letting them navigate campus in a wheelchair, giving them the ability to understand accessibility and social challenges." Fountain also pairs students of differing [dis]abilities for peer learning and assists the art education pre-service teachers in designing innovative products that can 'better the life of a person with a disability.' As a mentor, advisor, teacher and colleague, Fountain exhibits a calm and caring attitude of support. Misty Young, a Kutztown student shares, "I do not think that I would have made it this far in my pursuit for higher education without Dr. Fountain. She kept me going when I thought that giving up was my only option. She made me believe in myself and ...I now use my disabilities to help others." |
Outstanding Friend to Art Education
Dr. Sarah Tambucci
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Dr. Sarah Tambucci has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Friend to Art Education. Tambucci is currently the Director for the Arts Education Collaborative (AEC) which serves the western part of Pennsylvania providing informational and training resources for teachers and administrators integrating arts learning in all levels of education. Dr. Tambucci directed AEC's grant funded study of the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) and as a result, an educational model integrating more equitable and accessible arts education across all levels was developed. AEC has continued the relationship with PPS by seeking funding for the arts initiatives in the schools, preparing professional training for educators, and supporting efforts to develop and grow the art curriculum in the district. AEC is also active in keeping PA arts educators informed on policy developments and is working with the Educational Policy and Leadership Center (EPLC) in building the PA Arts Ed Network (PAEN), a state-wide coalition of organizations advocating for arts education across Pennsylvania. Angela Abadilla of the Pittsburgh Public Schools says, "Dr. Tambucci has a keen sense of knowing how to bring the right organizations together at the right times, many new and invaluable partnerships have been formed [due to her efforts]." |
Outstanding Regional Representative
Lisbeth Bucci
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association announces that Lisbeth M. Bucci has been named the PAEA 2012 Outstanding Region Representative. Bucci serves as a co-representative for PAEA in Region 12, and recently retired as a visual arts educator from Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills, PA. As a PAEA board member, she has begun and continued initiatives for regional events, and informative sessions for new and pre-service art teachers. She began a blog on the paea.org website, and continues to keep arts educators networked through digital means. "Lisbeth's energy and attention to detail are helping PAEA grow and respond to member needs," says Kris Fontes, PAEA President. |
Clyde M. McGeary Scholarship Program
The Pennsylvania Art Education Association Fellows' Clyde M. McGeary Scholarship Program presents annual scholarships to art education students in Pennsylvania colleges and universities.
Mr. Clyde M. Mc Geary is a retired art educator and Fellow of PAEA. Fellows of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association are a group of members who have contributed enduring distinguished service to Pennsylvania art education. Although no longer active on the Board of the organization, Fellows continue to seek ways to serve the profession.
As a Fellow, Mr. Mc Geary has created an endowment supporting the education of students entering the field of art education here in Pennsylvania. The cash value of the scholarships is determined by the income produced by the endowment and the number of scholarships that are awarded in any given year. In addition to the scholarship funds, a grant is also available to scholarship recipients for the purpose of attending the Annual PAEA Conference. The grant money is used by scholarship winners to offset registration and other travel expenses.
