It is that time of the year - time for our annual Carnival of Cultures! Mark your calendars for February 19. Children are working hard and as always they will astonish us with their talents.
This year the theme of the Carnival is " In the Name of Peace". As seen by the unfortunate world events of the last year, it is clear that peace is very fragile - that there are still many places on our planet where people can be persecuted or even killed just because they are different. With our Carnival of Cultures we would like to cherish the value of peace and to embrace our differences.
If you'd like to submit a picture that represents the theme and idea of the Carnival please do so. Send your pictures to Valentin Solachau or Amy Lenburg. The best pictures will serve as cover on the flyers and for marketing purposes.
There are also many opportunities for volunteers. We are looking in particular for musically talented kids and parents who could help play instruments for the event. Please contact Valentin Solachau if you are interested.
*After long considerations and listening to many different perspectives we have decided to do the event on ONE day this year.
Other new things this year:
- New lighting and sound system in the Aula
- Tina Haarbusch is planning to coordinate a fundraiser event with parents of the 6th and 8th grades that will happen simultaneously with the performance.
- This also means that people who came earlier (or later) to the event will be able to stay warm in the cafeteria and treat themselves with some beverages and cookies.
- There will be two parts with an intermission in between. It will allow more flexibility for parents, especially for families with little kids.
Here is a tentative schedule (this is subject to slight changes):
6:00 - 7:40pm Cookie bar in the cafeteria (Capstone fundraiser for and by 8th grade)
At the same time in the Aula:
6:00 - 6:30 Artwork Show of TCGIS students
6:30 - 7:30 Part 1: Kindergarten through 3rd grade
7:30 - 7:50 Intermission: a chance to leave if desired, some new parents will come
7:50 - 9:00ish Part 2: 4th through 8th grade
We try to stay true to the idea of the carnival as a sparkling and colorful event. As in previous years, no specific costumes are required for the majority of the performers. The children and parents are encouraged to feature ethnic costumes of the cultures of their origin or of the cultures that they represent at the Carnival. Please discus the costumes with your children - they might have brilliant ideas and would need your support.
Themes for each grade:
Kindergarten - Germany
1st grade - Asia (Turkey, Israel, China, Japan)
2nd grade - Africa
3rd grade - Native Americans and Latin America
4th grade - African Americans and American culture in the 20th century
5th grade - Medieval Europe
6th grade - Europe in 20th century
7th & 8th grades - working in groups, each group will represent a different culture If you have any questions, please contact Valentin Solachau. Looking forward to February 19!
