Reminder: Long Weekend and Early Release Next Week

This is a friendly reminder that there is no school this Friday, January 15 for teacher grading day or Monday, January 18 for Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Additionally, there is an early release next Wednesday, January 20. This means school gets out at 12:45pm and there are no after school activities this day.
Important Traffic Information

Dear families,

TCGIS was invited to the last neighborhood District 10 Council meeting to discuss neighbor concerns regarding traffic during pick up. Specifically, please be aware legally we are not allowed to block the bus stop at the triangle at Van Slyke and Churchill nor should we block the alley access at Van Slyke.

To ease the traffic on Van Slyke, starting Tuesday, January 19 all 2nd grade and carpools with 2nd grade will join pick up on the Como side.

Also, with the start of the new year and snow on the ground, we would like to reinvigorate our best practices for pick up to maximize student safety:
  • Please do not park on either side of Van Slyke or cross students on Van Slyke during pick up (Churchill is a great place to park and walk to pick up)
  • Please never pull U-Turns
  • Please never leap frog other TCGIS cars in the pick up line
We want to thank all of the families that have been so cooperative in adhering to good pick up practices as this greatly increases student safety and helps pick up go faster for all of us!

Vielen Dank!

No Name Calling Week 1/19-1/22

TCGIS is proud to announce that we will join many schools throughout the United States in participating in No Name Calling Week, beginning Tuesday, 1/19 - Friday, 1/22. By participating, the school is making an effort to educate our children about bullying, work on prevention, and enhance our social climate as a school community. During the week, classes may address the topic with short lessons and school-wide activities such as a kindness campaign or thematic dress-up days.

All students are encouraged to participate in the following dress-up activities:

Tuesday 1/19: red, white and blue - for united we stand
Wednesday 1/20: mismatched clothing - to show we appreciate differences
Thursday 1/21: wear two different shoes - to understand walking in someone else's shoes is difficult and eye opening
Friday 1/22: wear your clothing backwards - to show we've got each other's backs

Teaching Kids to Speak Up

Self-Advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself, make your own decisions, get information to better understand things, find out who will support you, problem solve, listen and learn. Kids need to self-advocate when they don't understand something in the classroom, when a friend treats them badly on the playground, or when they need to ask for help.

Join the TCGIS Special Education Advisory Committee for a discussion about teaching our kids to self-advocate Monday, January 25 from 6-8 pm in Room 100. RSVP for the meeting here. We are hoping to provide child care for this meeting, but you must RSVP by Friday, January 22, if you plan to use child care.

Any questions? Contact Beki Cook at [email protected].
