Help Build a Better Playground - Challenge Gift

Thank you to those who have already made a gift to support the new playground. A special thank you goes to the PTO for a $10,000 challenge gift. This means every gift made today or tomorrow will be matched dollar for dollar to help us achieve our goal.

Move to Excellence - 2014 ends this Sunday and our goal is $25,000 for new playground equipment.

Please donate now and have your gift matched by the PTO. Every bit counts and together we can reach our goal of $25,000.

On the donor site, you will be invited to view our long term playground plan, watch a new school video and consider supporting the campaign.

Welcome Back 8th Graders!

Tuesday night, the 8th graders returned from Germany. Thomas Wegener and the 5-7 middle school students welcomed the happy but jet lagged 8th graders with a welcome back banner. We wish the 8th graders a wonderful last week at TCGIS and are looking forward to the Graduation Celebration on June 6.

End of Year School Picnic
June 12 at Como Park

Dear parents,

This year's picnic will be held on June 12 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Como Park. Remember to hand in your hot dog order form  and payments for our all-school picnic on Thursday, June 12th. In order to be able to feed our entire community we are asking each family to bring a dish to share as listed here:

·      Kindergarten:      Dessert or Fruit

·      Grades 1 & 2:      Salad

·      Grades 3 & 4:      Chips, Crackers or Bread and Dip/Spread

·      Grades 5 - 8:       Vegetables and Dip

Please drop off your labeled food items in the staff lounge at school at drop-off or after 10am directly at either one of the 2 kitchens at the Como Park Shelters.

A great number of time slots for volunteer stations are still open, in particular activities at the park (ball games, face-painting, etc.). The sign up can be found here.

Thank you for helping to make this end of year tradition a great success!
The Yearbooks Are Here!

Swing by the office to pick up your copy of the TCGIS yearbook. All proceeds go towards the 8th Grade Capstone. Books cost $15. If you are unable to stop by the office, no worries! Books will be for sale at the End of Year Picnic Thursday, June 12th. Thanks!

Book Sale Was Huge Success!

The book sale sold $1241 in used and donated books this year! This is over $400 more than last year. All the money raised goes to the new library. Thanks to Kirsten Holmlund, Barbara Tarrant, and Kimberly Feilmeyer, Janet Lenius, and Lisa Linnell for volunteering.
5th & 6th Graders Deliver Donation to Como Zoo
Last Monday, our 5th and 6th graders delivered a donation to the Como Zoo. The students earned the money themselves at the school entrepreneur's day. Monday, we walked over to the Zoo and delivered $400.27 to Jennifer Downham, Director of Individual Giving. It was a inspiring experience for our students and a wonderful opportunity for community building. Thanks to Thomas Wegener and Tanja Schmitt for the great idea and organization.
Middle School Day at Second Harvest

Last Wednesday, the middle school went to Second Harvest to pack food for hungry Minnesotans. We helped feed more than 1,000 people total on the two shifts with more than 2,500 pounds of potatoes and tortillas. Wow! Thanks Stephanie Lauenstein for making it happen!

We Are the World, We Are the Children!

With respect of the International Children's Day on June 1st, the 5th and 6th graders rounded off the Social Studies unit on children's rights by fashioning colorful footprints, each showing one of the rights. The footprints lead all the way through the school building and invite students, teachers, and guests to find out more about the rights signed by almost all existing countries in 1989.

TCGIS @ German Fest
Saturday, June 21

Dear TCGIS Families,

The summer break is around the corner and it is time to plan some fun weekend activities. This year for the first time the German Fest will take place at the historic Schmidt Brewery on the weekend of June 21/22. The event organization invited TCGIS to participate in the festivities with performances and volunteering. We'd like to welcome you to join us on June 21 to celebrate the German heritage with dances, songs, and brats and beer at the German Fest.

Blumenkranz Performance on June 21

Meet Blumenkranz Dance Troupe Jr & Sr on stage at the German Fest Saturday, June 21 from 11:00am to 12:30pm.

Singers wanted for student choir

Herr Solakhau would like to assemble a student choir for the German Fest. Students from grades 2 - 8 are welcome to participate. We'll sing German songs, including traditional songs, modern songs, and rap songs. The repertoire will include many songs the students are already familiar with. Commitment is 3-4 rehearsals between June 13 and June 20, and the performance on the day of German Fest, on June 21. Please sign up here if your child is interested in participating in the choir.

Support TCGIS while volunteering at the German Fest

The German Fest organization will match every volunteer hour with $10 to the organization of your choice (hopefully TCGIS!) Possible areas of volunteering include:

  • helping on tours
  • selling beer / pop & water
  • selling merchandise / wristbands
  • helping at the volunteer table

Please sign up here if you're interested in volunteering.

If you have any questions about Blumenkranz or the choir, please contact Valentin Solakhau. For questions about volunteering, contact Isabel Vollenweider.

For more information about the event, please visit the German Fest website at www.germanfestmn.org.
Power School Announcement

TCGIS Children Theater Festival

Starting with a stunning performance of "Alice in Wonderland" by 7th & 8th graders (May 14), the students of 1B followed with their dramatic talents in the German fairy tale "Frau Holle" on May 15, and on May 16, the 5th & 6th entertained wonderfully with "Klatschgeschichten aus der ganzen Welt".

BUT this is not the end of the story, and we have more performances and perhaps more surprises in store!

In the next weeks you can enjoy the following plays:
  • May 28 & 29 - "Frozen" by 2B at 9am & 1pm
  • May 30 - "Dornröschen" (= Sleeping Beauty) by 1A at 9:30am & 1:15pm
  • June 2 - "Emil und die Detektive" after a book by Erich Kästner by 4B at 8:40pm & 2:10pm
  • June 5 - "König Drosselbart" by 4A at 9:30am & 2:10pm
