Remembering Marcy

This month solemnly marks the one year anniversary of the passing of one of TCGIS's beacons of light, co-founder, Marcy Zachmeier-Ruh. Marcy poured her heart and soul into bringing TCGIS to life; the quality of our school and community rest squarely on Marcy's hard work, stemming from her deep love for the German language. TCGIS is a testament to that love. The memory of Marcy also lives on at TCGIS as each year, one graduating student from the 8th grade class is honored with the Marcy Zachmeier-Ruh Award for the Promotion of German Language and Culture. As seen here in the pictures, December 3rd marked the one year anniversary of Marcy's passing. Staff placed flowers and a poster in the cafeteria where students wrote their thoughts and greetings to Marcy. We will continue to miss Marcy, but are honored to carry on her spirit in the great German immersion education we provide every day, and we are thankful for her legacy.

Old Man Winter Is here!

TCGIS staff is having great fun enjoying the wintery whiteness and cold each day.
Parents, thank you so much for your cooperation at drop-off and pick-up! You are doing wonderfully in helping us tuck the little ones quickly into cars and, thus, keeping them warm! If you haven't had a chance to check out the stylish winter fashion sported by Coach Rosenthal and Ms. Wallace, please do so on the Van Slyke side. We might want to have a competition with Ms. Morrissey, Herr Munoz, and Herr Solakhau on the Como side, seeing who can bundle up from head to toe more fashionably!

Winter reminders:

  • Please stay as close to the parked cars and curbs on Van Slyke while in line so the            public bus can pass by and stay on schedule.
    • Please consider giving yourselves extra driving time to get students to school on time to avoid excessive lateness.
    • Please follow the drop off and pick up procedures and wait in line patiently. Staff is working hard to load children quickly and efficiently as the snow and ice create extra challenges for us.
    • Don't forget extra layers, including mittens, hats, boots, and scarves to ensure children stay warm outside.
    • Consider healthy snacks that give an extra energy boost to stay warm in winter.
Thank you all for your cooperation and support!
Elementary Parent Social Hour on December 16

It is our great pleasure to invite elementary parents grades K-4 to a holiday social hour on Monday, December 16 from 8:00 to 9:00 am. (Please note the correction from last week's EB). Parents can visit classrooms, participate in morning circle, and chat with teachers. Kindergarten parents are also invited for gingerbread house making later that morning. first grade parents will help prepare cookies for baking and return in the afternoon to enjoy them.
New Van Slyke Drop Off/Pick Up Starting Monday December 16!

To improve drop off and pick up, TCGIS is making the following changes on the Van Slyke side:
    • Kindergarten parents please drop off children at the playground entrance
    • Kindergarten students will line up east of the flagpole for pick up, near the playground
    • First grade will line up west of the flagpole
    • Please stay as close to the curb or parked cars while waiting in the pick up line so the public bus can pass and stay on schedule
    • Please do not walk children across Van Slyke in the middle of the block. If you park on Van Slyke, please walk to corner crosswalks.
Thank you for your continued cooperation in supporting TCGIS!

    Seeking Intern Host Families

TCGIS is still seeking families to host an Amity intern for this Spring 2014. We are also still asking for families who could host Amity interns in the spring. Benefits of hosting an intern:

    • Learn German from a native so your children don't talk about you behind your back!
    • Lifelong international friendships!
    • Free tutors for your children!
    • Enjoy a new cultural perspective!

Please contact Nicole Grenz or Darcy Rindelaub for more information.

Please Check Lost and Found by December 20!

The Elementary Parent Social Hour is an excellent opportunity to swing by the first floor and collect any items that have migrated there! All items that are not collected by Friday, December 20 will be donated to Goodwill by the end of the year. The Lost and Found is located in the large wardrobe at the bottom of the stairs as you head to the front office. Check it out!
    Lunchroom Update

"The dish ran away with the spoon"

As part of our move towards better sustainability practices within our school, the lunchroom now uses washable metal utensils. Anyone is welcome to use these utensils to eat their lunch. However, many of our utensils have been accidentally taken home in lunch boxes at the end of the day. Please check your drawers at home and return to us any utensils belonging to the school, and remind your children to return their utensils to the bin at the end of each lunch period.

    'Tis the Season for Giving!

Has your child had an extra special wonderful experience at TCGIS this school year? Did she dissect her first worm at school? Travel back in time at the Maya exhibit? Make a new friend in an after-school activity? Why not show your appreciation with a year-end donation to TCGIS? The school will take in-person donations at our front office, or simply go to our TCGIS Give to the Max website to give online. All donations are tax-deductible.
Sixth Grade End of Year Party

The sixth graders would like to have a holiday party after school on December 20 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It would be great if everybody could bring a small snack (nothing big) or something to drink. I hope we can count on your support. Some teachers  have kindly agreed to supervise the party. The parents are free to relax at home or do some shopping while the kids are away!
