CSC Receives Grant from Burke Women's Fund for
GALS (Girls Actively Learning Science) After-School Program

Catawba Science Center is pleased to announce receipt of a $4,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Burke County's Burke Women's Fund to establish an all-girls, after-school science program at Ray Childers Elementary School. The GALS (Girls Actively Learning Science) program creates a "girls-only" environment for 3rd through 5th graders. This unique learning community will seek to provide the mentorship that is needed in order for young girls to become comfortable with science topics and envision themselves as scientists.

Twenty-two girls will be chosen by their teachers to participate in this pilot program during the 2016-17 school year. GALS will introduce participants to a variety of science topics through hands-on programs and activities. Many of these subjects will be aligned to topics they are studying in school.

The informal programs are designed to increase each girl's interest in science, encourage confidence in their abilities, and to help them develop a strong science identity. The hands-on activities will allow participants to experience a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities more in-depth than during the school day.

Executive Director, Alan Barnhardt, says, "We appreciate the confidence shown by the Burke Women's Fund in selecting the Catawba Science Center's proposal. This project will build on our partnership with Burke County Schools as we introduce these girls to exciting fields of science."

The content within each program will be age-appropriate and aligned with NC's Essential Standards for Science. The programs will include hands-on, group-based projects that are expandable depending upon the girl's personal engagement and fascination. Topics will reflect areas where women remain under-represented in the STEM pipeline.

New Shows at Millholland Planetarium
In this adventure, Little Star learns what makes each star special, and discovers that stars combine to form star clusters and galaxies. Little Star even finds his planets and each is introduced with basic information about our Solar System.

The deep sea is one of the most mysterious and little-explored regions of Earth. We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do about the wonders hidden beneath the waves of our planet's seas. The show shares glimpses of rarely seen marine organisms: bioluminescent frogfish, jellyfish, vampire squid, viperfish, pelican eels, and the mysterious fangtooth.

LazerDaze

Featuring music from Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis,
and ZZ Top, enjoy the sights and sounds of LaserDaze,
CSC's latest laser show.

Imagine & Discover A World You Can't See!

Nano is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. Hands-on exhibits present the basics of nanoscience and engineering, introduce some real world applications.

  • Explore progressively smaller magnetic materials.
  • Build a giant model of a carbon nanotube.
  • Try a series of interactive challenges.
  • Spin disks containing small and large plastic beads, comparing the relative effects of static electricity and gravity on different size beads.

Experience Through May 15

Embark on a journey through watersheds to see how everyone's actions on land affect our ocean. Make it rain in a large 3-D watershed model! Pilot a full-size two-station "submersible" from mountain stream to the ocean. Encounter eye-popping aquatic species and ecosystems along the way! Be a biologist and go deeper. Guide "water" safely through a hazardous maze. Flip paddles and divert "pollutants" as they travel through stormwater drains. Discover how river otters made a comeback. Spot the polluters and be a Watershed Warrior! What can YOU do in your watershed to protect our ocean?
