September 2015
DinoScare

September 15th thru January 3rd
Did you know that scientists think some dinosaurs were active at night?  Just imagine if you could travel back in time millions of years to a nighttime filled with dinosaurs.  Well, thanks to Catawba Science Center (CSC) you can - DinoScare brings robotic dinosaurs "alive" in the time after the Sun has set.

Large animals easily overheat, so they avoid the hottest time of the day and seek food when it is cooler. Apatosaurus was one of the largest land animals ever, so most likely it foraged for food during twilight or even in total darkness. Plant eaters like Apatosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and Pachycephalosaurus have to eat more often, another reason they probably were awake during non-daytime hours.  All these dinosaurs will be out looking for you at CSC.

The dinosaurs that ate the plant eaters had to be active at night to hunt (think of lions today).  So, while you are walking through the eerie twilight of DinoScare look out for the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Scientists study dinosaur fossils and look at the proportions of certain features of the eye to try to figure out if the dinosaur could see well at night.  To get an idea of what it is like to go on an expedition in search of dinosaur fossils visit DinoScare's paleontological base camp.

SPIN

Now in the Edgerton Gallery

Spin is an exhibition that showcases the study of rotation, and how rotation affects nearly all aspects of our life. In this hands-on exhibition visitors can learn about centrifugal force, rotation, weight and so much more.

Spin is geared for all ages, children of any age can have fun experimenting with the stations that make up Spin.

Whether it is seeing how far your car travels at the Fast Lane station, or getting into the human centrifuge and experiencing the feeling of rotation first hand, Spin has countless ways to observe and experience the science of rotation and motion.

All CSC programs are designed to further students' understanding of the Nature of Science.

Out from the Sun
in the Millholland Planetarium

thru October 25th

Join us, as we travel out from the Sun and take a tour of some of the highlights of our solar system.

Our journey begins at the Sun.  It is about 865,000 miles across.  Without all the light, all the heat, all the energy from this star, there would be no life on Earth. There are stars smaller than the Sun and stars much larger.

Traveling out from the Sun we'll visit the planets. Did you know that if you lived on Mercury, you would have about a day and a half each year!  We'll go down on the surface of Venus where the temperature is about 864 degrees Fahrenheit and the air or atmosphere is poisonous, made of mainly of carbon dioxide with clouds of sulfuric acid.

Some 93 million miles from the Sun we'll encounter our home planet, the Earth.  In low Earth orbit, traveling north from the Gulf of Mexico, we will see the lights of our big cities are like beacons.

Leaving Mars behind, we come across a small ball of ice and dust, a comet.  Then in an area where we might expect to find a planet, instead we encounter numerous rocks of various sizes, the Asteroid Belt.  These asteroids range from dust-sized to over 500 miles across. They are left over from the formation of the Solar System.

The gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, the ice giants Uranus and Neptune, dwarf planets and more await us.

So, welcome aboard our imaginary spacecraft as we journey out from the Sun.

Zula Patrol Under the Weather
in the Millholland Planetarium

thru October 25th

The stalwart heroes of the Zula Patrol are on an expedition collecting samples of weather on planet Zula for scientist Multo's research -- using their loyal pet Gorga's ability to collect and bottle all kinds of weather.

But when the Zula gang inadvertently hurts Gorga's feelings, he decides to leave Zula and find another planet to live on. Interplanetary villain Dark Truder tricks Gorga into stealing the weather from other planets - part of his latest nefarious scheme to rule the Universe. The Zula Patrol find out and go after him - in the process learning all about weather, both terrestrial and interplanetary
