NEW ADDITIONS TO WICKED PLANTS: THE EXHIBIT
|
The Wicked Plants Exhibit at Catawba Science Center has been called "Wild, Neat, Amazing, Mysterious, and WICKED COOL!" Set in the venue of an old Victorian Mansion, visitors never know what to expect around the next corner. There are several mysteries to solve as one explores and learns about plants that can make one itch, sick, kill, or do other strange things. Hands on components engage visitors of all ages to learn about plant - their uses, dangers and how some are invasive (taking over natural habitats.
High tech computer and electronic screens share scientific data and folk lore while a working Zoetrope (early motion picture device) illustrates how some plants move by catapulting their seeds.
Catawba Science Center Staff have added other surprises - live creatures in special cages. Have you spotted our Giant Bird Eating Tarantula, 7'long centipede or other arthropods that arrived at opening time?
Recently, a two new creatures have found their way into the exhibit.
White Eyed Assassin Bugs, native to Africa, are cousins to Stinkbugs and the strange looking Big Wheel Bug found in Catawba County. These showy carnivorous insects have bright white dots on their shiny black bodies.
Giant Spiny Stick Insects (also called Devil's Thorn Bugs, are native to New Guinea with relatives around the world. (Their North Carolina Cousins are called walking sticks.) The Spiny Stick Insects resemble walking, crawling thorn branches, and have near perfect camouflage. They are herbivores- eating leaves of many bushes and trees including pyracantha (fire thorn), rose, blackberry, and oaks. The males have large "thorns" on their back legs for protection.
These strange, exciting insects will be on loan for the duration of the Wicked Plants Exhibit at Catawba Science Center from the Museum of Life & Sciences in Durham, North Carolina
