Registration is open for Catawba Science Center's Summer Fun Science Camp Program.

13 weeks of butterflies, insects, science, technology, and more

Catawba Science Center (CSC) enthusiastically announces that registration for their Summer Fun Science Camp program is now open. This year's curriculum is promising to be a better, more exciting hands-on learning experience for children in grades pre-K to rising ninth. Children will have more opportunities to get involved in their learning experiences as they explore the world around them. Parents will enjoy the flexible arrival time and discount opportunity.

Over a period of 13 weeks (May 28th through August 23, 2013), students will be engaged in many thought provoking topics. CSC will immerse children in a variety of activities that will pique their interest in science.

The morning session is geared towards four year olds to rising ninth graders and will take place between the hours of 7:30 am to noon. Students can arrive at CSC between the hours of 7:30 to 10:00 am.

The flexible arrival time allows future scientists to discover the wonder of science at their own pace. Starting at 10:00 am, CSC's staff of certified teachers will lead structured classroom activities geared towards the weekly theme.

Activities include getting up close and personal with butterflies and insects, investigating the makeup and use of circuits, discovering our universe through a variety of experiments in addition to learning about airstreams and the weather.

Rising fifth through rising ninth graders will have the opportunity to explore the world of robots. These are just a few of the many fun learning adventures your participants will have at CSC's Summer Fun.

Beginning at noon, kids enrolled in Afternoon Adventures will enjoy a bevy of summer activities including swimming, games, scavenger hunts, and movies. These field trips are designed for first through rising ninth graders to keep them active during their summer break and dodge the summertime blues.

New for 2013, parents who enroll their child for eight (8) weeks or more will receive a 10% discount on already low rates. This added perk makes the program more affordable for those families looking for a quality summer experience for their children.  Plus, the parents can have peace of mind knowing that their children will be taught by certified teachers during classroom activities.

CSC continues to offer payment options to families for their educational expenses. Thanks to the generous support from the community, a limited number of scholarships are available for qualified applicants on a first come first serve basis.

CatawbaScience Center Welcomes ASU's Dr. Raichle to Hickory for the Science After Dark
Science Café Series

In conjunction with their latest exhibit, Conservation Quest, Catawba Science Center (CSC) is gearing up for another exciting Science After Dark - Science Café program at Bistro 127. The Science Café will take place on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 7 p.m.
CSC will welcome Dr. Brian Raichle from Appalachian State University (ASU) to Hickory, NC, for his informative discussion on, Renewable Energy: Present and In Your Future.

If you want to learn about turning your home green, don't miss this enlightening educational experience. Dr. Raichle's presentation is a snapshot of current energy generation and consumption patterns. Part of his presentation describes state of the art technologies available today, with an emphasis on adaptation by the average homeowner.

Dr. Brian Raichle is an Associate Professor of Appropriate Technology in the Department of Technology and Environmental Design at Appalachian State University. He is a trained experimental nuclear physicist who has for the past 10 years applied his skills to renewable energy teaching and research. His areas of interest currently include solar photovoltaic and solar thermal system characterization, remote monitoring and control of landfill gas collection systems, wind resource assessment, and a little bit of algae. His interests, of course, will likely evolve over time.

2012-2013 Science After Dark - Science Café programs are sponsored by The Best of Beers, LLC and Focus Newspaper.

After listening to Dr. Raichle's discussion be sure to visit CSC and the Conservation Quest exhibit. Loaded with hands-on activities, Conservation Quest delivers important energy conservation messages, inspiring visitors to make thoughtful choices about energy use to help protect the planet and promote healthy living. Learn about energy - what it is, where it comes from, how it's used and why it's so important to use it wisely.

Conservation Quest topics include: energy sources, energy use at home and around the world, climate change, environmental health, stewardship, conservation and the future of energy.

NanoDay (part of a national network's [NiseNet] NanoDays celebration [MARCH 30 - APRIL 7, 2013] of all science things extremely small) will be on Saturday, April 6th from 10 am - 4 pm. The focus of the Science Ambassadors' activities in the Inventor's Workshop on this day will be nanoscience - they may be working with our visitors on any of the following:

  • "Liquid Crystal Displays" is a hands-on activity in which visitors investigate temperature-sensitive liquid crystal sheets and liquid crystal displays from a calculator. They learn that liquid crystals change color as a result of nanoscale shifts in the arrangement of their molecules.
  • "Invisibility" is a hands on activity in which visitors investigate how glass objects can be "hidden" in some liquids.
  • In "Moving Molecules" visitors use an air cannon toy to spin pinwheels. They learn that air is made up of molecules, which are tiny nanometer-sized particles.
  • "Gummy Capsules" lets visitors make self-assembled polymer spheres. Self-assembly is a process by which molecules and cells form themselves into functional structures and has applications to medicine.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS

Teen Volunteer Opportunities for the Summer

Teenagers interested in doing something different this long summer will want to apply for CSC's Summer Fun volunteer program! The program will allow kids to work with our staff during camp - performing science demonstrations, playing with campers during morning activities and educating the children about our animals. This opportunity to serve our community also looks great when it is time to fill out college and job applications.

Volunteers will be asked to make a four week commitment to the Science Center for at least 11 hours each week.  The program is open to all teenagers; an application, interview and references are required. For an application or more information please visit our website or contact Erin Graves, Director of Programs.
