Touch O' The Green Family Day
In conjunction with the Conservation Quest exhibit, Catawba Science Center (CSC) wants to help people celebrate St. Patrick's Day with giving them "A Touch O' The Green." Families who stop by CSC on Saturday, March 16, 2013, from 10 am to 4 pm get to enjoy many exciting hands-on activities that will surely make those who don't attend green with envy. Topics include garden water conservation, bucket gardens, natural dyes and culinary herbs.
Thanks to the generous support of the Conservation Quest sponsors, all activities for the "Touch O' the Green" Family Day are included with a general admission purchase. Plus, the first 100 children that enter CSC get a commemorative Conservation Quest grow cup. This souvenir cup teaches children the art of gardening and gets them excited to learn about the source of our food.
The quest for the perfect garden starts at 10am, when Kelly Groves of the NC Cooperative Extension Service discusses different methods of conserving and reusing water in gardening. This invigorating talk will show families how to preserve one of nature's most precious resources while making their gardens bountiful. Guest should arrive early as Kelly will only be at CSC until 2 pm.
After listening to Kelly, guests can learn the benefits of bucket gardening from 11 am until 3 pm. Foothills Transition Group will lead a interactive demonstration that shows that a simple five gallon bucket, seeds, dirt and water is all that is needed to grow wonderful produce. This exciting form of portable, low-maintenance gardening helps future "green thumbs" realize that they don't need plenty of space to grow their own food. CSC will provide plenty of soil and seeds to help kick start guest's emerald oases but participants are encouraged to bring their own five gallon, food grade buckets in order to take their soon to be food resource home.
Throughout the day, families can join natural dye specialist Sandra Cranford of Lenoir, NC, as she displays samples of her dyes and shows guests how to dye fabric using her concoctions.Visitors can then examine a display of her finished cloths and yarns and look at samples of the plants and nuts used to create her beautiful eco-friendly items.
As an added bonus, foodies will enjoy talking to Becky Cortino about culinary herbs and how to utilize them in your kitchen. All of her crops have been grown using green methods of horticulture. Guests to her display will get to look at both live and dried herb specimens from 10 am until 4 pm.
Thanks to the generous support of Alex Lee, Inc., Corning Cable Systems, Duke Energy, Hendrick Honda Hickory, Mike Johnson's Hickory Toyota and a media partnership with WFAE 90.3 FM, Your NPR News Source, Catawba Science Center is proud to bring Conservation Quest to Hickory, NC.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS |
Teen Volunteer Opportunities for the Summer
Teenagers interested in doing something different this long summer will want to apply for CSC's Summer Fun volunteer program! The program will allow kids to work with our staff during camp - performing science demonstrations, playing with campers during morning activities and educating the children about our animals. This opportunity to serve our community also looks great when it is time to fill out college and job applications.
Volunteers will be asked to make a four week commitment to the Science Center for at least 11 hours each week. The program is open to all teenagers; an application, interview and references are required. For an application or more information please visit our website or contact Erin Graves, Director of Programs.
