Science After Dark - Laser Shows

Catawba Science Center's (CSC) Science After Dark series of laser shows for adults continues with Saturday night events in the Millholland Planetarium during the month of February. Shown for the first time at CSC will be Pink Floyd: Through the Prism, a compilation of Pink Floyd classics. Also featured will be Classic Rock, a CSC-compiled arrangement of songs by well-known bands from the 1960's through the 1980's. The visualization of both shows employs fast-moving, bright, colorful abstract images moving to the beat of the music within the immersive environment of the Millholland Planetarium.

These will be the first Science After Dark programs to utilize the recently renovated SkyLase laser projection system. Working with Audio Visual Imagineering in Orlando, Florida, a more powerful green laser was added, and the red laser was upgraded to a brighter wavelength. Installation at CSC was completed by Planetarium volunteer Dr. Tom Lesser and CSC's Assistant Director Tricia Little. Lesser's technical experience, gained during his years as Senior Lecturer at the American Museum - Hayden Planetarium in New York, proved invaluable in the installation process. The resulting visual experience on the 30 foot Millholland Planetarium dome is dynamic and entertaining, with more stunning images for all future laser show productions.

The popular laser shows will be presented in the Millholland Planetarium each Saturday in February, beginning February 2nd. Classic Rock kicks off the evening at 7:00 p.m. and will feature a collection of songs assembled by the staff of CSC. Participants will enjoy rocking to classics such as AC/DC's Back in Black, Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, a Beatles medley and several other blasts from the past. Pink Floyd: Through the Prism, will be presented at 8:15 p.m. This new show is a compilation of Pink Floyd classics including One of These Days, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and Pigs on the Wing.

Advance tickets are recommended for each show. Tickets are $6 for CSC members and $9 for non-members. Contact CSC at 828-322-8169 or visit CSC to reserve seats. Evening laser shows presented as part of the Science After Dark series are recommended for adult audiences. Beer and wine will be available for a donation at the Saturday, February 23rd shows. Catawba Science Center's 2012-2013 laser show series is sponsored by: The Best of Beers, Focus Newspaper and 95.7 The Ride.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS

Teen Volunteer Opportunities for the Summer

Teenagers interested in doing something different this long summer will want to apply for CSC's Summer Fun volunteer program! The program will allow kids to work with our staff during camp - performing science demonstrations, playing with campers during morning activities and educating the children about our animals. This opportunity to serve our community also looks great when it is time to fill out college and job applications.

Volunteers will be asked to make a four week commitment to the Science Center for at least 11 hours each week.  The program is open to all teenagers; an application, interview and references are required. For an application or more information please visit our website or contact Erin Graves, Director of Programs.
