Iliotibial Band (IT Band): a longitudinal fibrous reinforcement of the fascia lata.
In layman's terms, the IT band is a long tendon running down the outside of your upper thigh. The action of the IT band and its associated muscles is to flex, abduct, and medially rotate the hip. In addition, the IT band contributes to lateral knee stabilization. During knee extension the IT band moves anterior, while knee flexion moves the IT bend posterior. Because it moves across the knee joint, a tightening of the IT Band and it's associated muscles can lead to knee pain on the lateral (outer) portion of the knee as the tendon is physically rubbing across bone. This is often caused by a sudden or dramatic increase in activity. So as you start to ramp up your mileage this summer, make sure to do it gradually and place a greater focus on stretching, especially your IT Band.

In the last few months leading up to your target event, your base training should begin to be reduced as you put a greater emphasis on intensity in your training. This phase of training, known as the Build Phase, is the next step towards advancing your fitness...READ FULL ARTICLE
