Letter from Staff

Dear friends,

As I type this note to you I'm aware that many millions of people are being affected by extreme weather in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Florida and elsewhere. I'm aware that millions of men, women and children around the world, including my own city, struggle every day to find food, clean water and safety.  I'm aware of the increasing polarity and hateful rhetoric in the US and elsewhere on so many critical issues.

How do you relate to all of this?  Personally, I often feel overwhelmed and numb, finding it hard to trust that my one life and small contributions matter.  And yet from the lives of heroes I have learned that every one of them just kept taking the next step.  Mandela didn't know he would become Mandela nor did Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa or others who have become icons and beacons of inspiration.

Gandhi said, "Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." Let us know how we can help.

Thank you to the 100 + people who participated in the joyous celebration at Gandhi House this past Sunday.  The rain didn't dampen our spirits or ability to dance.

This comes with love from everyone here,

Kit

for the Gandhi Institute

An Open House Thank You!

We would like to sincerely thank all of the community members and volunteers who made our annual open house celebration a success! Despite the rainy weather, we had more than 100 attendees celebrate nonviolence and community.

We would like to give a special thank you to DJ Alykhan for his talent and time, John Curran for graciously helping us borrow tents and tables, BIODANCE for a thoughtful & inspirational performance, and our resident sewing ladies for their artistry.

For more open house photos, check out our Facebook page and photo album!

As the autumn leaves transform into a panorama of warm colors, so has the Gandhi Institute's website. Former colleague, Shannon, and freelance web-designer & volunteer, Torry, dedicated weeks to updating our website so it could be modern, effective, and beautiful.

Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016
10:00am-1:00pm

As the election grows closer, "hate" is littering social media to describe everything from campaigns, candidates, and even the supporters themselves. Negative language may infiltrate campaigns, but what about when it spreads from politicians' TV ads into our living rooms?

How is hate becoming a phenomenon?

What is hate? How does it shape our thoughts, identities, and communities? What can we do about it?

Join Gandhi Institute director Kit Miller for an afternoon dedicated to exploring this seldom discussed topic through a variety of perspectives and traditions.
