Fall Appeal
December 2014

"If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Friends,

The quote above is located just inside the door here at the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence as a daily reminder to all of us to take the best thinking from the 20th century and bring it into the 21st century.

We are conducting our fall fundraising drive and have a goal for this appeal of $55,000. We ask for your help because you know of the significance of the Gandhi Institute's work to this region and beyond. Will you make a year-end contribution to help reach this goal? Click here to donate now!

We are able to take gifts of stock as well. With this support, you help to keep the flame of nonviolence lit.

The Institute is involved in the Rochester community on many levels. Below are some of our approaches for spreading what both Gandhi and King encouraged us all to understand:

-Clubs in six Rochester-area urban and suburban schools led by Gandhi staff, sharing nonviolence tools and supporting students to take action;

-Daily programming for 70 city 7th and 8th graders teaching conflict resolution, mindfulness, nonviolence, empathy skills and more;

-College and community programs in nonviolence and conflict resolution;

-Gardening projectsat our headquarters to create food, beauty and community;

-A variety of dialogue initiatives to understand and overcome challenges related to racism and intolerance of all kinds.

Our newest educational project, the Gandhi Knowledge Cards (pictured below), has particular promise. It offers an accessible understanding of Gandhi's life and principles for people of all ages. This project is also being developed as an iPhone app in several languages.

With your help, we will keep the spirit of Mohandas Gandhi alive for generations to come. Your donation is appreciated. Especially on behalf of the youth that we serve; thank you.

In peace and hope,

Michael Hagelberg  -President, Board of Trustees Director

Kit Miller  -Director

Violence + Violence = Violence

Anger hot and humid as it is,

Can burn a hole in your heart and break others' hearts.

Hurt people, hurting other people, get it?

A hurt person expressing his or her feelings on someone else can change that person's life forever.

Feelings are good and bad and happy and sad.

Anger as evil as it is can turn your best friend to your worst enemy- it depends how you express it.

Expressing your feelings quick can make somebody sick.

Bad feelings and good feelings it's the war of the mind.

Think Before Reacting.  T.B.R.

T.B.R. can save somebody's life but hold on!

It may never come back the same way but karma will come back on you.

T.B.R.

It reflects your personality. It makes you the bigger person.  So yeah, move along with your life- think of peace and move forward.

It's like a bridge.

If you burn that bridge down how are you going to connect back?
