Launched in 2013, the Nonviolence Youth Empowerment Project at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy in Rochester is supported by M.K. Gandhi's and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Principles of Nonviolence. We believe that change first begins within, "We are the change we wish to see in the world."

Nonviolence facilitators serve as positive role models in the school environment, providing urban youth with tools and strategies to overcome and combat violent and negative behaviors.

Letter from the Director

March 2014

Dear friends,

Time with Dr. Lafayette and Jonathan Lewis last week (see below) was extraordinary.  We have been delighted to hear from dozens who expressed their appreciation for the learning and inspiration. I loved when students from across the socioeconomic spectrum in the greater Rochester area came together for two days to learn and debate Dr. King's principles of nonviolence, justice and social action.  These are the principles that we are using as the backbone for our nonviolence clubs at Northeast College Prep, Wilson, and Pittsford Mendon high schools. Students from these three nonviolence clubs received first choice to attend the training with Dr. Lafayette. They were joined by students from Penfield HS, Allendale Columbia and other schools too.

Ultimately, the best feedback came from Dr. Lafayette and Jonathan themselves, who expressed a wish to return! We are planning now for their return visit in July, to be part of the 50th anniversary remembrances of the 1964 Rochester riots; they will hold a five day 'Train the Trainers' week with the same youth and youth workers who completed the two-day training.

Last Thursday classes in Nonviolent Communication started at Groveland Prison, part of their Season for Nonviolence programming. The commitment and interest in the Season from our brethren at Groveland continues to inspire all of us here.

If you want to help out, invit
e friends to the concert on Sunday, March 9 with the amazing Cammy Enaharo.  I hope to see you there!

This comes with love from everyone here,

Kit Miller

We need your support for Dr. Lafayette's Historic Visit!

We are still gratefully collecting funds to help pay for Dr. Lafayette's visit to Rochester. Please consider making a donation to help foster nonviolence education for our youth and youth workers.
