FUN AND STRENGTHENING

RELATIONSHIPS DURING SUMMER 2013

St. Thomas' Church from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania put on an old-fashioned carnival for the girls at the end of their week. A spectacular "moon bounce" and delicious cotton candy treats were big hits with the girls.

The different mission groups set up many fun activities including  pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, ring toss, fish pond, spoon and egg race, tattoo table, lollipop tree and many more games that elicited smiles and much laughter.

Each group put together new activities catching the attention for all age groups.

Group of St. George's Episcopal Church, Nashville, TN serving food for the girls.

Elaboration of earrings, bracelets, etc. is one of the favorite activities for the girls 15+ (St. George's group)

The group provided lovely artificial flowers and supplies so that the girls could make Thank you bouquets and then give them to each of the OLR staff. (St. George's group)

GETTING READY FOR THE BEACH!

One of the activities made by the group of Christ Episcopal Church, Alexandria, Virginia was the elaboration of beautiful and colorful beach purses. Those purses are strong enough that the girls can carry their school books to the school. Great girls!

DO I SPEAK ENGLISH?

This summer English classes began with adults who work at the home and the older girls. Padre Spencer has eight adult students (made up of the drivers, the cleaning ladies, the tias) and Gail Haldeman, a volunteer from the diocese of Southeast Florida, has twelve older girls, all learning English.  There is  a separate class with two of the girls from the home who are beginners in their English: Genesis and Guadalupe.

The hope is Padre Spencer will continue these classes  in the fall. Having learned Spanish late in his own life, Padre Spencer relates with the struggles of adults learning English. He says, "Many of them already know more than they think, the major major thing with language after the grammar and spelling is getting over ego and pride and fear and just speaking, something I know a little bit about.  You've got to make lots of mistakes, that's part of speaking. I am very proud of the progress they've made!"

Keep up the good work girls and staff!

With Love,

Sponsor A Child

There are many ways to support Our Little Roses, but one of the most valuable is to sponsor a girl. This gives the home an assurance of a steady source of support for a girl for several years -- hopefully until she becomes an adult. Sponsorships are $720 per year, which may seem like a lot, but paid quarterly ($180) or monthly ($60) is quite manageable.

If you sponsor a girl, you will receive a certificate and a photo, and you are welcome to correspond with the girl you sponsor.

Or you may wish to sponsor the educational tuition for one of our girls attending Holy Family Bilingual School, a special needs private school or university. Education is vital to transforming their lives.
