"Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, "This is the real me," and when you have found that attitude, follow it."

YOUR UNIQUE AND SEXY SPEAKER AT YOUR NEXT EVENT!

"Marion Claire brings light into the room as she sets everyone at ease so they are ready to learn.  Our team mostly had no experience in public speaking, and so were shy and stumbling at first, but gained confidence quickly under Marion's effective guidance.  They were left with solid information that they could use as they practiced putting speeches together and then giving them.  And as a seasoned speaker myself, I nonetheless learned a thing or two to make my speaking more effective."

Speaking Is Sexy Vol. IV, Tip #1

Finding the Unique & Sexy You

Here we are at the top of 2013, looking at a clean slate of empty months filled with infinite possibilities. Because we haven't yet filled the days up with successes or failures, we can safely say, "This year I'm going to..." and fill in the blank with our favorite, cherished resolutions.

The tradition of creating New Year's Resolutions is long established, whether it's a formal list of goals or just a couple of wishes tossed out over a convivial cocktail with friends.  At the moment we make them, we're darn sure we're going to keep them. And some of them we actually do. But most of them, truth to tell, are left by the wayside or forgotten by the time February rolls around. So the question I've begun to ask is, why make New Year's Resolutions at all? Why not, instead, make a real change?

Many folks came up to me last year who said they'd like to improve their speaking abilities, get over their fear, look for more opportunities to speak to groups, but... There's always a 'but'. What does that 'but' really mean?

I have a theory that people never take action to improve anything until we're so miserable with the status quo that we simply can't stand it anymore. Humans are an interesting species; we'll put up with incredible amounts of disappointment, frustration, fear, disillusionment, etc., rather than do anything to change it.

When it comes to public speaking, most folks will think about becoming more skilled, dream about it, talk about it, wish for it, but they won't actually do anything about it until they absolutely have to, until avoiding being the best speaker they can be is really harming them professionally or personally. The businessman who can't give a 60-second intro at a networking meeting without getting red-faced and tripping over his tongue and the entrepreneur who can't make a 20-minute speech on the value of her services without shaking in her designer shoes have at least one thing in common. They believe it's okay to lose out on the personal and professional success that would come their way if they could present themselves and their businesses confidently to the world. The change required, they believe, is just too hard.

If you had to choose, which would you prefer? To settle for what you've got without challenging yourself to be better and achieving more? Or to accept that being the best you can be will take hard work, but you'll find you're capable of succeeding in ways beyond what you'd thought possible up to now?

The tricky thing about change is that it breeds like rabbits. One change leads to another, and pretty soon you'll become someone to admire for all kinds of qualities you didn't know you had. When you become a cool, confident speaker, comfortable in front of the room before any crowd, that skill and comfort will spill over into other parts of your life and business. You'll be more impressive both personally and professionally, attract more positive attention and achieve greater results. People will respond to your new-found confidence, and new-found success will march right along with it.

Making real change is so much more gratifying than a simple resolution to do better. Make the commitment to yourself to do the work, overcome your reluctance, do the thing you're afraid to do. Become a unique & sexy speaker and who knows? You may find the unique & sexy 'you' along the way!

Revealing An Embarrassing Secret

We all have an embarrassing secret that we don't want to reveal because we're afraid people will think less of us if we do so. For many, many years I hid mine. I was sure that people would look at me strangely or not want to be around me if they knew I was less than perfect. Boy, was I wrong!

The thing about hiding the truth about yourself is that you are depriving yourself and the folks you come in contact with of the opportunity to have an honest relationship with you. True, you don't want to just blurt out your deepest feelings or most painful memories at inappropriate moments. You want to be sure your revelations will be received with kindness, consideration and sympathy, and not with distaste, anger or ridicule.

But it is far better to be open about the things you cannot change that have shaped who you are. Facing the secrets of the past helps you understand yourself and it helps others understand you. And with understanding come the gifts of appreciation, sympathy, empathy, and love.

So here's the embarrassing secret I used to be afraid to reveal.

For over 20 years, I suffered from agoraphobia, the fear of crossing open spaces. Sometimes I couldn't leave my house for more than five minutes, without scurrying back inside. My enemy was not the great outdoors. It was simply fear.

Everyone experiences fear on occasion. And everyone's fear is a little bit different, personal to the individual. Mine was fear of being alone out in the world. I didn't feel safe by myself. Although I was perfectly content to live on my own, I needed the comfort and companionship of someone I knew well whenever I ventured out of the safety of my home. No way could I dream of getting up to speak in front of a room full of strangers!

I'm so proud to say that I overcame my fear. It took, first of all, the courage to admit there was something wrong. Then came the desire to fix it and to seek out the help I needed to overcome it.

And wow! Look at me now!

Today I speak in front of groups of all sizes, shapes and interests.  If I can do it, so can you!  Let me help you.  contact me at Marion@marionclaire.com.
