Happy New Year! 2014 was a big year for the USA Science & Engineering Festival! The Festival hosted programs like our X-STEM Symposium, the Nifty Fifty (x3), the X-STEM School Program and celebrated the "Super Bowl of STEM" at the grand finale Expo! During the last weekend in April, the Festival took over the entire Washington, D.C. Convention Center, utilizing over 2.3 million square feet of space to inspire the next generation of our countries STEM workforce.
At the Expo, approximately 325,000 Festival attendees enjoyed:
- Over 3,000+ hands on activities from over 1,000 organizations exploring topics like: What is the universe made of? Why did dinosaurs go extinct? What do magic tricks and hip-hop have to do with math? What will be the next medical breakthrough? What does baseball have to do with physics and much more!
- Interviewing physicist, chemists, astronauts, mathematicians and more at our "Meet the Scientists and Engineers" Pavilion.
- F-35 flight simulation and musical robots at the Lockheed Martin Pavilion.
- Researching STEM programs from the nation's top universities and colleges in our Career Pavilion.
- Performances from Science Celebrities including Grammy Award Winning They Might Be Giants; Dirty Job's Mike Rowe; Bill Nye the Science Guy; Wonder Years and Dancing With the Stars Celebrity, Danica McKellar; National Geographic's Brain Games, Apollo Robbins; New York Times Number 1 Best Selling Author Michio Kaku; and many others!
Leading up to the Expo Finale, on Thursday April 24, the Festival hosted our first ever X-STEM Symposium-- a TED-Style event that featured some of the most innovative minds in STEM! Over 4,000 students participated in presentations from inspirational STEM professionals including Dr. David Gallo, Dr. Francis Collins, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Jack Andracka, Dr. Laura Richman and many other STEM Superstars!
Our successful Nifty Fifty (x3) program brought approximately 150 of the top scientists and engineers in the country to schools all over the D.C. Metro area!
Finally, we are excited to report that hundreds of Festival volunteers donated over 3,500 hours to support the USA Science & Engineering Festival! Thank you!
