Falcon Flyer
May 2016
|
President's Message
When you receive May's Falcon Flyer there will only be 33 school days left
this year and so much still going on at Fremont! Before I list what you can't
miss in May, I'd like to take the time to recognize the outstanding
volunteer efforts in April.
Thanks to the following volunteers who helped our school:
- Roberta Jeannette for coordinating our Teacher of the Year Essay Contest
- Roberta Jeannette and Robin Jones for managing the Spring Book Fair
and all of the Fremont parents who helped work shifts - Adriana Manfredi for providing fun, creative activities for Fremont students during Screen Free Week (aka Turn-off-the-TV-Week)!
- Roberta Jeannette, Room Parent Coodinator for planning and executing a thoughtful Teacher Appreciation Week and all of the room parents and class VIPS who helped her make it possible
- Amy McCleery, Junko Iton and Maria Lebel for providing
a delicious Staff Luncheon
Mark your calendars for fun events coming up in May. You don't want to miss...
- Used Book Sale: Saturday, May 7th from 8:30-11:30 am at Fremont.
Thanks to Jaime Renville for coordinating this effort! Contact her to provide books and help with the sale at [email protected]. - Carnival: Saturday, May 21st, from 11-4 pm at Fremont. We have a new team planning this fun day and they can still use your help! Please contact
Bridget McIntyre ([email protected]) and Maria Lebel ([email protected]) to get involved. - Carnival Silent Auction: Saturday, May 21st, 11-2 pm in the school
cafeteria. We also have a new team coordinating this important event. Proceeds from the silent auction help fund our PTA programs. Donations are still being accepted. If you can help, please see Stephanie Baker ([email protected]). Thank you to Stephanie and her team for coordinating. - Open House: Thursday, May 26th from 6:30-8 pm.
Please join us on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30 pm in the library for our final PTA meeting of the year. Bring your calendars as we'll plan for next year and bring your tissues as we'll hear the winning Teacher of the Year Essay by Krista Richardson presented to our Teacher of the Year: Mrs. April Campos!
The meeting will be followed by parent education speaker and Fremont parent, David Deeble. Speaker, comedian and former world-champion juggler
(The Tonight Show, America's Got Talent!, Last Comic Standing)
David will be giving a talk, "Winning With A Bad Hand,"
about the principles which facilitated his journey from conventional
to comedic juggler after a head injury cost him the coordination
in his right arm. Be prepared to laugh, learn and be amazed!
Complimentary childcare will be provided on-site in the Kids' Club
bungalow (tips are welcome) and take the night off from cooking
by ordering from Dominos who will give 20% back to Fremont!
All meetings include creative, delicious treats from our hospitality team
and don't forget the after-meeting fun at EJ Malloys!

PTA Volunteers Wanted!
Do you love Fremont?
Does the energy created by the annual Jog-A-Thon put a smile on your face?
Did you find the 100+ Fremont Scholars who personally raised money through lemonade stands and bake sales to support our labs inspiring?
Do you want to get more involved in helping the PTA sustain the programs that make Fremont the gem of our neighborhood?
Fremont PTA needs
your help!
The PTA is in need of individuals interested in volunteering to help with the 2016 Jog-A-Thon, our biggest fundraiser of the year and the 2016/17 S.O.S. Campaign, THE fundraiser to sustain
our science and technology labs.
Without volunteers to
help with these events,
our programs are in jeopardy and our scholars will lose out.
If you are interested, or even think you might be interested, we would love to talk to you. Please contact either SarahGomez-Kaveney or JillBrubaker.
Fundraising not your "thing" but you would still like to get involved? Let us know your interests and we can help connect you with a committee, program or activity that's just
the right fit!

As we enter the month of May there are a little more
than thirty days of school left in the school year, but there is still a lot of instruction and activities before the school year comes to an end. We will continue to develop academic skills and expect students to continue with their best effort in their work. The third, fourth, and fifth graders are still taking the Smarter Balanced Test and will finish with testing later this month. The results of the test should be mailed out to students in August.
Have you taken the time to see what your child
is doing in Language Arts and Math?
Our students have grown so much from academically and physically since the beginning of the school year. A big way to support your child is to continue to turn them on to reading and participate in the Home Reading Club. Studies have continually showed that students who do well academically read daily for pleasure. Students who read on a regular basis at home also improve their writing skills. Open House is Thursday, May 26th. This is a time to see what our students have been doing in the classroom at Fremont this year. The Fremont staff has completed a three-year training this year in Write from the Beginning. Write from the Beginning is a writing program that has been adopted by the Long Beach Unified School District and builds upon skills each year into middle school and beyond. Fremont students have been writing in a variety of genres and will be given a grade-level writing prompt this month. I hope to see the Fremont families at our school carnival on Saturday, May 21st. Thank you for all you do to support Fremont and make it such a wonderful school.
