Falcon Flyer
December 2015

President's Message

As we approach this holiday season you might ask yourself..."is it better to give than receive?" I think so and so do all those research-based happiness surveys as well!  To help ensure your happiness, give to Fremont this December from the top ten best ways provided below.

  1. Give a donation and HUGE thank you to the Jog-a-thon team!  Donation envelopes are due December 4th.
  2. Give to the Salvation Army Food Drive between 12/1-12/15.  Food drive collection boxes will be provided in your child's classroom.
  3. Give to the Bethune School for Homeless Children through our Helping Hands effort. See more information below in our newsletter, watch for fliers in backpacks, or contact Lauren Friedman at: [email protected].
  4. Give a bone marrow test swab to help Wilson High School student, Luke Johnson, find a bone marrow match to help his fight against leukemia.  Go to https://join.bethematch.org/teamluke to find out how.
  5. Give your time to your child's classroom by becoming a VIP.  See Elizabeth in the office to learn how.
  6. Give to the Drama Club by chaperoning at rehearsals.
  7. Give to the Chess Club by chaperoning during their meetings.
  8. Give to the PTA by becoming a member go to http://fremont-pta.org/membership/ to sign up.
  9. Give supplies to your child's teacher including the Science and Computer Labs.
  10. Give a monthly donation to our SOS campaign through PayPal.  Go to http://fremont-pta.org/sos/donate/ to sign up.
I'd like to give a huge shout out to the following group of people who recently gave to our school:
  • Susan Tanaka, Brenda Sheridan and their team of volunteers from the Drama Club for a fun movie night!
  • Maria Lebel, Amy McLeery and their hospitality committee
for providing a variety of delicious, creative culinary delights
    at the PTA meetings!
  • Mr. Curran for his continual support of the PTA and recent achievement report update at the November PTA meeting.
  • Those who volunteered to be on the nominating committee:
Mark Taylor, Maria Lebel, Sarah Gomez and Krista Richardson
to help us recruit a diverse group of new PTA Exececutive Board leadership for next year.
  • The PTA Executive Board: Jill Brubaker, Michelle Pryor,
Sarah Gomez, Krista Richardson, Michele Chaparro,
Rolando Cruz, Amy McLeery, Celinda Frey, Rebeca Haga, Roberta Jeannette, Bridget McIntyre, Mr. P. and Mr. Curran
for their commitment to leading our PTA and doing their work
    so effectively.

  • Our outstanding Jog-a-thon effort led by Jennifer Perez and her committee including Dianne Miller, Michele Chapparo, Lisa Dempsey, Deborah McGinnis, Sherry Horn, Tanya Moran, Meka Crawford, Mandira Temblay, Shanna Ickler, Hobie the DJ and all of the countless parent volunteers to help make it a huge success!  Please consider joining this team who will be in need

The results are in!

Fremont Falcons created some beautiful and inspiring art work for the 2015 Reflections Art Program. The artwork was on display at the Reflections Reception,
Tuesday, November 17th.
We turned the cafeteria into a museum, and got to see the diversity of talent and vision that we have
at Fremont.

The following students were chosen to compete at the next level of Reflections,
a great honor!

Aravah Marcus,
"The Nature Butterfly"
(Visual Arts)

Anika Kerekes, "Imagination of You" (Literature)

Liv Richardson,
"Tiger Fear"
(Literature)

Maxwell Tanaka, "Troublemaker" (Photography)

Allyn Richardson, "Haunted
Halloween House"
(Music)

Elizabeth Talanian,
"Eli's Imagination"
(Dance Choreography)

Congratulations to all for their hard work!

Box Tops
We have earned $232.00 so far by collecting
Box Tops!

Our first submission date for this year's Box Tops was November 2,
and thanks to all of you, we have earned $232.00 toward our goal of $400!
The next submission date is March 1, so please keep clipping those
Box Tops,
especially as you shop for holiday food and goodies.

Look for Box Tops on cereals, Ziploc bags, granola bars, cake mixes, Progresso soups, and other items (they're worth 10 cents each). Put them in a plastic bag or envelope, and drop them in the collection box in the school office lobby.  You can collect even more by asking family members and neighbors to save Box Tops for you too.
You can also help Fremont by registering an account on

You can enter their frequent sweepstakes events to earn even more money for Fremont.
Last year my entry was selected in a sweepstakes, earning our school an extra 250 Box Tops.  The more people from Fremont who play, the better our chances
of winning!

Contact Erin Caron at [email protected] with questions or to help count Box Tops.

Principal's Message

Parent conferences have concluded
and we now start the second quarter
of the school year. I highly encourage parents to look closely at homework your students are given. Check to see how
your child is progressing in reading,
writing, and math. Students should be able to explain what it is they are doing.
Students should be completing homework and reviewing and practicing skills and concepts covered in class. This is a time for students to develop their reading, writing, and math skills in order to perform at their best on their assessments.

The Fremont staff has been participating in the Write from the Beginning training. Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Ramirez, and Mrs. Aimerito have been presenting this program to our staff. It looks closely at student writing and working on areas to help students improve the quality of their writing. I have seen amazing writing pieces from all grade levels including kindergartners.

The fifth graders will be given important dates about the middle school choice process and application. The application is done on ParentVue. If you have not activated your ParentVue account, Liz in the office can assist you. There is a computer in the office that parents can use to activate their accounts. More information will be sent home with fifth graders in January about the middle school application process.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents who volunteered at the Jog-a-thon, with a special thank you to Jennifer Perez and the Jog-a thon committee who put in many hours to make the event a success. Thank you to all who have contributed and collected contributions. We have a dedicated and involved PTA that helps our school in so many ways. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season and look forward to 2016!

Mr. Curran

Jog-a-Thon

It looks like we had a 4-way tie with
our kindergarten girls!

Not only did Ava Chow run 16 laps,
but so did:

Addie Fennessy
Laurel Smith-Thomas
& Ava Dennin

Congrats!
You also qualify for the Grand Prize raffle!
______________________________

Keep the donations coming in!

Pledge envelopes will be due THIS Friday, December 4th

The class that raises the most money will earn a pizza party!

Remember every dollar and spare coin counts; NO amount of donation is too small. The GRAND TOTAL at the end of the day is what matters. There are over 500 students at Fremont. If everyone can contribute a little, we will have A LOT!
______________________________

Awards Assembly and Big Red Bus will be on Thursday, Dec. 17th

For those who qualify for the Big Red Bus ($250+), it will be after school on Dec. 17th.  Information and permission slips will be
sent home next week.
