President's Message
It's time to Spring forward!!
Spring is upon us and boy will it be busy. This month is full of fun events for our little Falcons and their families.
We started March "Sailing Away" with our Parents' Night Out fundraiser, and we will be wrapping up our second largest fundraiser, the SOS check drive, soon! This fundraiser is solely for the purpose of sustaining our Science and Technology Labs. Your continued dedication to these labs is SO greatly appreciated.
As we move forward with Common Core and its computer testing element, we really see the benefits of our computer lab;
our students are more than prepared! Thanks to your help and the money raised through SOS, Fremont students are given an hour of computer instruction by a qualified teacher every week
beginning in Kindergarten.
We also have an amazing Science teacher! Mrs. Malloy not only has an array of live animals in the room, but her curriculum includes hands-on experiments and projects. This added instruction is important for every age, but shows most obviously in our
5th grade science test scores.
Speaking of Science, we will celebrate it a lot this month. Science projects are due on Wednesday the 18th and then we'll have our 7th Annual Family Science Night on Saturday, the 22nd from 4-7pm. This is a fun evening at school where parents and scholars can look at the different projects and enjoy an evening of
wacky and fun physical science!
Thank you,
Michelle Walker

Meet the Masters
Thursday, March 6th marks our fifth
Meet the Masters assembly for our Fremont artists.
Paul Gauguin, a
19th century French painter, is our featured master.
Meet the Masters is a Southern California company that presents age appropriate histories of artists in a multi-media, interactive assembly format. After learning about the artist, our teachers are presented with an art project in the style of the master. Later, they have the opportunity to create the project with their students.
Parent participation is always needed in the classroom to help with these projects; instruction is provided to teachers and volunteers at 130pm on the same Thursday as the assembly. Supplies are provided in the library.
If you'd like to offer your help (no artistic talent needed, really!) feel free to contact your child's teacher or Teresa Hamilton at
[email protected].

Principal's Message
A big mahalo (Thank You) to all who are helping to organize the Support our School (SOS) check drive and Parents' Night Out. The parent support at Fremont is tremendous and much needed in helping provide the computer and science lab experience for our students. Fremont is the only elementary school in the Long Beach Unified School District that has a science lab and a computer lab with a credentialed teacher providing the instruction. This is possible through the generous donations made to the SOS committee. Please continue to support Fremont through the SOS check drive. The past week I have seen students in the science lab dissecting sheep hearts, and in the technology lab researching information for projects they are doing in social studies, plus being shown how to use tools on the computer to illustrate and enhance their work. Our Fremont students are able to have these exceptional learning experiences due to the efforts of our parents who spearhead these fundraisers, and from the parents who generously support our school.
Please note, while the LBUSD has supplied schools in the district with some computers, these computers are to be dedicated to the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The district is not providing any instruction or credentialed teachers. Because Fremont Elementary is a small school with no empty classrooms to convert into a Smarter Balanced testing area, we were provided with a laptop cart that will be stored in the Library for our students to use for testing. All students in grades three through five will be taking the Smarter Balanced test on these laptops during the months of April and May. However, the testing this Spring is a field test, meaning students will not be given scores or individual results. Fremont students are far better prepared than most to test in this type of setting because of the instruction provided at all grade levels in our technology lab with a certified teacher.
Mr. Curran
Principal

Teacher of the Year
Essay Writing Contest
|
Fremont's teachers are the main reason
that this is such an amazing school!
Take the time to recognize one or more of the teachers your child has been fortunate to have during their time here by submitting an essay to the annual Teacher of the Year Essay Contest (sponsored by the Long Beach Council PTA).
Essays may be written by a parent or a student, or it can be a joint effort!
Even alumni students looking back fondly on their time at Fremont can submit an entry. Please take a moment to let any of our teachers know what they have meant to your child/family and how much you appreciate them. All entries will be shared with the appropriate teacher, who will certainly
be grateful for your thoughts.
Please click here to download the cover page and then follow these specific guidelines carefully:
Formatting Requirements:
Typed or handwritten
Double spaced with 1'' margins
2 single-sided pages maximum
Prepare a brief narrative for the following questions (be as specific as possible):
1. What qualities make the teacher outstanding?
2. How does the teacher exemplify being a good role model?
3. What techniques does the teacher use to be able to reach all students?
4. How does the teacher provide a positive learning environment where all students can thrive?
5. How does the teacher make learning fun?
All entries are due by 2:30pm on Friday,
March 28th in the PTA Mailbox,
located in the Fremont office.
The selected essay will be sent to the Long Beach Council PTA for further consideration.
A committee will meet to review all essays submitted by the deadline and select this year's winner. If you interested in participating in this committee, please contact Michelle Pryor:
[email protected].
