November 2013

President's Message

Fall is my favorite time of year.  I love the warm glow of candlelight, crisp evenings and cooking comfort food; it reminds me to slow down. The first few weeks of school have been fast paced -- we have had our Back To School Night, Fall Social, a book fair, drama auditions, a blood drive, and our Membership Drive Movie Night Celebration! Thank you to everyone who came out to support that event.  What a fun night.

A BIG Thank You to the Membership committee for a wonderful and successful event!

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held November 4-12, and are

minimum days! These conferences are a great way to get acquainted with our teachers and to also learn more about the Common Core method and how our scholars are already fast at work learning new ways of thinking.

November 8th will be our largest fundraiser, the Jog-a-Thon!  100% of the money raised supports the many wonderful programs the PTA provides for Fremont. Every student that participates gets a JAT t-shirt.

On a sad note, it has come to my attention that items have been reported missing after school or after night time events. If you found something that is not your, please turn into the office.  Also, for missing items, please check the kids club lost and found.  I have found the same "lost" sweatshirt many times there!

Enjoy your Thanksgiving break November 28-29.  My family and I will be running in the Long BeachTurkey Trot...maybe we'll see you there.

Sincerely,

Michelle Walker

2013-2014 PTA President

Principal's Message

November starts with Parent-Teacher Conferences from November 4-12.  These are minimum days and students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm on these days. This is an important time to meet with your child's teacher and find out the progress that is being made at school, and to set goals as we move forward.
Teachers will be sharing reading levels on district benchmarks, math fact proficiency, and scores on new district created unit assessments that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

The school district is having the first trimester report period be a progress report for all elementary students.  The district is revising the guidelines that incorporate different assessments that are used to determine student grades.  The second trimester report card will follow the new district criteria.  The progress reports will give parents information of how students are progressing academically in the core subjects.  The new district assessments are proving to be challenging to our students as they are having to understand concepts and explain their reasoning and thinking.  This is how they will be assessed in Language Arts and Mathematics on new state tests.

The month of November will go by fast.  The Jog-a-Thon is coming up on November 8th.  This is a tremendous fundraiser for the Fremont PTA.  Please sign up to volunteer if you can and help your child get donations pledged.  I am so impressed with the parent support at Fremont.  The staff at Fremont is thankful for all the extra work the parents do to make our school one of the best!

Waste Not Want Not

Attention Cafeteria Lunch Eaters!

Did you know that lunch in the cafeteria is an "offer-not-serve" program?
This means every student gets to choose from a variety of healthy options for lunch:
Dairy, Vegetables, Fruits, Grains, and Proteins.
Each student must pick 3 of these 5, with fruits or vegetables being one
of them.

Please encourage your child to choose what they want, but also to eat
what they choose.

We have noticed some significant waste in our cafeteria and are working to figure out a plan to donate un-used food when possible, but the best solution is for our children to eat these healthy choices and have lots of fuel for the playground and for learning!

Thank you!

Home Reading Club

Home Reading Club Rewards Begin

The students' reading logs are due for the month of October.  Volunteers will deliver books to the students in the next week.  They should be turned in by November 7, in order to receive a book.

K-3 graders must read for at least 20 minutes for at least 20 days of the month; 4-5 graders are expected to read 30 minutes for at least 20 days of the month.  If your student didn't complete their reading commitment for October, they start with a clean slate each month!

Read Any Good Books You'd Like to Share?

Do you have any gently used books that you could donate to the Home Reading Club?

The PTA purchases many new books each year for the HRC; however, donations of gently used books would help the budget go further!  If you would like to share any of your books, please place them in the box, located under the PTA mailbox in the office, labeled "Home Reading Club Books."  Thank You!!!

Meet the Masters

Thursday, Nov. 21st
marks our second Meet the Master's assembly for
our Fremont artists!

Paul Klee, a 20th century Swiss-German painter is our featured master.

Meet the Masters is a Southern California

company that presents age appropriate histories of artists in a multi-media, interactive

assembly format.

After learning about the

artist, our teachers are presented with an art

project in the style of the master.  Later, they

have the opportunity to create the project with

their students.

Parent participation is always needed in the classroom to help with these projects;

instruction is provided to teachers and volunteers at 1:30 on the same Thursday as the assembly.

Supplies are provided in

the library.

If you'd like to offer your help (no artistic talent needed, really!) feel free to contact your child's teacher or

Teresa Hamilton at

[email protected].
