 October 2013
President's Message

The school year is well underway and the PTA has hit the ground running with programs and activities.  As my second year as PTA president begins, I would like to acknowledge a few particular volunteers for sharing their talents with our community during September.  It really does take a village!

* A warm thank you to Tanya Williams for her work on the Fall Social...again!  What a fun, relaxed evening of friends, food, and music it was.  Thank you to everyone who came out for the event.  As well as, say a proper good bye to Mr. Hammond.  What an amazing turnout!

* Roberta Jeannette and Kelly Sullivan hosted another successful Book Fair.  We appreciate their efforts and those of the numerous volunteers involved.

* Spirit Wear is off to a successful start through the tireless efforts of Samantha Morrison.

* Congratulations to Susan Tanaka,  Michelle Anderson, Jean Newkirk and Kathleen Turner, they have reached our PTA membership goal for 4th year in a row!!

* Kathleen Turner, Alisha Atella, and Director Sean McMullen are getting our Drama Program started.  The 4th and 5th graders have begun workshops to prepare them for auditions.  There was an informative meeting for all the parents who's children want to be part of this amazing program.

* Meet the Masters has begun under the supervision of Teresa Hamilton.  She's got some wonderful artists scheduled for this year.

* The Kids' Club staff have made so many posters to promote our programs!  What a helpful service to our chairpeople!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to every volunteer at Fremont who has participated in getting the year off to a great start!

In the month of October the pace of activity will continue to pick up, with the Home Reading Club beginning, Student Picture Day, the annual Sue Shrickel Blood Drive,  and Drama all taking place early in the month.  On October 18th, the kids will be learning about our single biggest fundraiser -- the Jog-a-thon.   And at the end of the month, the entire student body will be showing off their best costumes at our Annual Halloween Parade.

Thank you to everyone who has joined the PTA charge during our annual PTA Membership Drive.  What a HUGE success we've achieved as a community!   This is the fourth year in a row that 100% or more of our children are represented by a PTA member.

I feel, and hope you do as well, such a positive energy from our school community.  Amazing things are bound to happen at Fremont - AGAIN- in the months ahead!  Should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions throughout the year, please contact me at [email protected]

Sincerely,

Michelle Walker

2013-2014 PTA President

Principal's Message

The 2013-2014 school year is already into its second month.  Back to School Night was a big success and was very well attended.  Teachers working with parents are a valuable partnership for a successful school year for the students.  Please continue to communicate and team together with your child's teacher and the school staff to ensure a productive year.  We are so pleased to have your children at Fremont Elementary.  It is truly a pleasure to walk through the different classrooms at Fremont and see tremendous teaching and learning taking place. The staff at Fremont continues to grow professionally in delivering quality instruction.  Student learners are being asked to show evidence to support their answers to questions that are posed to them in all curricular areas.  Student assessments are changing with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.  Students will be asked to write more to explain their reasoning.  Perseverance is a virtue that students at times will need to embrace as they attempt to solve problems and seek answers.

The Fremont school community is a wonderful and caring place.  Fremont has a dedicated staff and many volunteers who willing give of their time and share their talents to benefit the students.  It truly is a community effort in providing the best for our students.  There are many worthwhile endeavors going on throughout the year.  One special event which has become a tradition at our school is the Sue Schrickel Memorial Red Cross Blood Drive which will take place on Thursday, October 10th from 1:30-7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium and cafeteria.  Quite probably you or a loved one has benefitted from this special gift of life.  If you are able, please join the blood drive effort on October 10.

Mahalo (thank you) to all who have been welcoming to me at Fremont and for all this the support that is given to the entire school.

Jog-A-Thon News!
null

Last year over 500 students jogged and worked hard to earn over $60,000 to support Fremont programs that we all value.

100% of the money raised by the students from the Jog-A-Thon (JAT) goes to programs like the Technology Lab, Science Program, Drama, Field Trips, Meet the Masters, and many other amazing programs.

In October, information will come home with your student on JAT.

All students will be given a T-Shirt in honor of this annual event and have the opportunity to win many exciting prizes as a result of their hard work.  Your participation is critical for the success of this even and we thank you in advance for your help!

We look forward to celebrating this exciting event with your child and family.

The JAT Committee welcomes all

Home Reading Club

A Reward for Doing your Homework!

Starts October 1st!

books-apple-sm.jpg

Most -if not all- of the teachers at Fremont require their students to read as part of their homework. Why not encourage your child to fill out the HRC log when they do & earn a book for their efforts? The PTA purchases a large inventory of books for the children to select from each month that they complete their reading commitment. A variety of interest areas, genres, and skill levels are available, and the children who do participate really enjoy selecting their book each month.

The HRC requirements are 20 minutes for at least 20 days each month for kindergarteners through 3rd graders and 30 minutes a day for at least 20 days for 4th & 5th graders. Fill out that form that will come home at the beginning of each month and reward them for their efforts!

Read Any Good Books You'd

Like to Share?

Do you have any gently used books that you could donate to the Home Reading Club? The PTA purchases many new books each year for the HRC; however, donations of gently used books would help the budget go further! If you would like to share any of your books, please place them in the box, located under the

PTA mailbox in the office, labeled

"Home Reading Club Books."

Thank You!!!

Meet the Masters

 null

Thursday, October 3rd, marks our first

Meet the Master's assembly for our Fremont artists. Rembrandt van Rijn, a 17th century Dutch painter is our featured master.

Meet the Masters is a Southern California

company that presents age appropriate

histories of artists in a multi media, interactive

assembly format.  After learning about the

artist, our teachers are presented with an art

project in the style of the master.  Later, they

have the opportunity to create the project with

their students.

Parent participation is always needed in the classroom to help with these projects; instruction is provided to teachers and volunteers at 1:30 on the same Thursday as the assembly.  Supplies are provided in the library.

If you'd like to offer your help (no artistic talent needed, really!) feel free to contact your child's teacher or Teresa Hamilton at [email protected].
