President's Message

The school year is well underway, and the PTA has hit the ground running with programs and activities.  As my second month as PTA president begins, I would like to acknowledge a few particular volunteers for sharing their talents with our community during September.  It really does take a village!

* A warm thank you to Tanya Williams for her work on the Fall Social...again!  What a fun, relaxed evening of friends, food, and music it was.  Thank you to everyone who came out for the event, as well.  What an amazing turnout!

* Michelle Pryor hosted another successful Book Fair.  We appreciate her efforts and those of the numerous volunteers involved.

* Spirit Wear is off to a successful start through the tireless efforts of Samantha Morrison.

* Congratulations to Susan Tanaka, Jennifer Scharnikow, Michelle Anderson and Kathleen Turner, they have reached our PTA membership goal!!

* Kathleen Turner, Jennifer Scharnikow, Sean McMullen and Karen Victor are getting our Drama Program started.  The 4th and 5th graders have begun workshops to prepare them for auditions.  There was an informative meeting for all the parents who's children want to be part of this amazing program.

* Meet the Masters has begun under the supervision of Lisa Dempsey.  She's got some wonderful artists scheduled again for this year.

* The Kids' Club staff have made so many posters to promote our programs!  What a helpful service to our chairpeople!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to every volunteer at Fremont who has participated in getting the year off to a great start!

In the month of October, the pace of activity will continue to pick up. Home Reading Club will be starting up.  Student Picture Day, the annual Sue Shrickel Blood Drive, New Family PTA Orientation and Drama will all take place early in the month.   On October 19th  the kids will be running their hearts out at our largest PTA fundraiser of the year, the Jog-a-thon.  Hope you'll be able to come out and support our runners!  The entire student body will be showing off their best costume's at our Annual Halloween Parade.

Thank you to everyone who has joined the PTA charge during our annual PTA Membership Drive.  What a HUGE success we've achieved as a community!  We surpassed our goal of 676 members and have received 681 memberships!  This  is the third year in a row that 100% or more of our children are represented by a PTA member.

I feel, and hope you do as well, such a positive energy from our school community.  Amazing things are bound to happen at Fremont - AGAIN- in the months ahead!  Should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions throughout the year, please contact me at president@fremont-pta.org

Sincerely,

Michelle Walker

2012-2013 PTA President

Principal's Message

We are well on our way into the 2012-2013 school year.  Teachers presented key information at Back to School Night, which was very well attended.  This is the beginning of a valuable partnership between teachers and parents for a successful school year for the students.  Please continue to communicate and team together with your child's teacher and the school staff to ensure a productive year.  We are so pleased to have your children at Fremont Elementary.  We view each student as a scholar, full of potential and possibility.  As such, in the classrooms students are being encouraged and taught to practice traits that are characteristic of a scholar as developed by Dr. Sandra Kaplan.  Scholars, for example, come with "cups" half full thirsting for more to learn, set short and long term goals, organize their supplies and tools so they are prepared to learn, save their ideas, and take pride in the quality of their work.  Scholars also exercise their intellect while learning to persevere, ponder ideas, take intellectual risks and think outside the box, look at the world using many perspectives, ask questions and seek answers, and use a variety of resources and references.  At Fremont Elementary, our students truly are scholars.

Our school community is a wonderful place to be.  With a dedicated staff and a multitude of volunteers willing to share their time and talents, there are many worthwhile endeavors going on throughout the year.  One special event which has become a tradition the past few years at our school is the Sue Schrickel Memorial Red Cross Blood Drive which will take place on Thursday, October 18 from 1:30-7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium and cafeteria.  Quite prossibly you or a loved one has benefitted from this special gift of life.  If you are able, please join the blood drive effort that Thursday.

Get Ready to ShakeOut!

 At 10:18 a.m. on October 18, 2012, millions of

Californians will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" in The Great California ShakeOut,

the largest annual statewide earthquake drill ever!

Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you work, live, or travel in California. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared. The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming

a catastrophe.

Why is a "Drop, Cover, and Hold On"

drill important?

As with anything, to act quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.

More than 8.6 million Californians participated in the 2011 ShakeOut statewide. The Great California ShakeOut is an annual earthquake drill at Fremont and provides an opportunity for everyone to improve their overall preparedness. It also gives us peace of mind that we will be better prepared to survive and recover quickly

from the next 'Big One' in our region.

We encourage everyone to have an emergency plan at home too. For more information visit www.ShakeOut.org/california.

* DROP to the ground

(before the earthquake drops you!),

* Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk

or table, and

* HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

Home Reading Club

A Reward for Doing your Homework!

Starts October 1st!

Most -if not all- of the teachers at Fremont require their students to read as part of their homework. Why not encourage your child to fill out the HRC log when they do & earn a book for their efforts? The PTA purchases a large inventory of books for the children to select from each month that they complete their reading commitment. A variety of interest areas, genres, and skill levels are available, and the children who do participate really enjoy selecting their book each month.

The HRC requirements are 20 minutes for at least 20 days each month for kindergarteners through 3rd graders and 30 minutes a day for at least 20 days for 4th & 5th graders. Fill out that form that will come home at the beginning of each month and reward them for their efforts!

Read Any Good Books You'd Like to Share?

Do you have any gently used books that you could donate to the Home Reading Club? The PTA purchases many new books each year for the HRC; however, donations of gently used books would help the budget go further! If you would like to share any of your books, please place them in the box, located under the PTA mailbox in the office, labeled "Home Reading Club Books." Thank You!!!

Reflections

Would your child like to share their artistic talents?
reflections logo

Reflections is an annual event where students can submit an artistic creation (visual art, music, literature, photography or dance choreography) for display and for judging, with the possibility of being moved on to further judging levels, all the way to a National level.

It is a great opportunity for students to express themselves and be recognized for their artistic talents.

This year's theme is:

"The Magic of a moment..."

Students are invited to interpret the theme

in any way they feel is appropriate.

Projects will be due by November 2nd!

There are very detailed and specific instructions and requirements for the contest.
