Falcon Flyer

February 2012

President's Message

I hope you had a chance to see this year's drama club production, "Yellow Brick Road!"  From the 250 talented and courageous performers, to the nearly 200 volunteers who taught choreography, made costumes and sets, ran the lobby booths, and so much more, this was a Fremont community event at its finest.  The sense of camaraderie was present throughout the past months, but was particularly apparent this past weekend.   Thank you to everyone involved with the program.  I hope it was a good experience for all involved.  The kids seemed to have a great time!

This month marks the 9th year of the Support Our School (SOS) Campaign, our effort to raise the funds for the Science and Technology Labs.  Please participate in any way that you can.  Encourage your children to get involved, too!   They can collect spare change, sell lemonade on the corner, or have a used toy or book sale.  Ask them for other ways they may join in and feel a part of this important, massive community effort.  If we all contribute in some way to the cause, our children will reap the rewards.

Hope you have a wonderful month!

Sincerely,

Michelle Anderson

Principal's Message

We have a couple of programs at our schoolMr. Hammond that I would like to bring to your attention.  Perhaps you have heard these expressions around the school: praise people, give up put-downs, seek wise people, notice and speak up about hurts I have caused, right wrongs, and help others.  These are the principles of a program called Peace Builders which our students are learning.  Students are being taught life skills that will help them now and in the future.  These principles can be put into practice at school, home, and in the community.

Another program in which our school has the privilege of participating is Safe and Civil Schools.  This program provides tools and resources to promote a school environment which is pleasant, polite, and respectful.  A common area at the school which we are spotlighting is the playground, teaching the students STAR traits which stands for Scholarly behavior, Treating others respectfully, Active involvement, and Responsibility.  Students can earn STAR slips for exhibiting these characteristics and then be part of weekly reward drawings over the next three weeks.  Playground rules and our school uniform policy which go along with the STAR characteristics are being sent home as a reminder to all.

Bravo!  The Drama Club production of "Yellow Brick Road" was a resounding success.  Everyone involved can be very pleased with the wonderful results as enjoyed by a packed auditorium for all three performances.  This has been a great opportunity for students to develop their talents, learn stage presence, and gain confidence which will benefit them in many aspects of their lives.  Thank you to director Sean McMullen, assistant director Karen Victor, program coordinator Kathleen Turner, and the team of volunteers who made this production happen.  Well done!

Open Officer Positions for 2012/2013 PTA Slate

Board Members Wanted!

Are you enthusiastic about our fabulous school and its unique programs?
Would you like to participate more closely in decision-making
that affects the welfare of all our students?

If so, please consider being on the Executive Board of the PTA!

There are a few PTA Board positions open for the 2012/2013 school year - Executive Vice President, Recording Secretary, Auditor, and Historian.  All positions are usually for a 2-year term and will involve varying time commitments for their particular duties, in addition to:

* Attendance at monthly PTA board meetings
(last Wed. of the month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.)

* Attendance (as much as possible) at monthly general PTA meetings (second Tue. of the month from 7 to 8 p.m.)

* Occasional other meetings with committee chairpersons
(4-5 per school year)

The Executive Vice President offers continual assistance to the president. Typically chairs the honorary service awards, teacher of the year essay contest, Founders' Day, and other end of the year celebrations.  Additional duties will be determined between the president and the exec. vp.

The Recording Secretary takes the minutes at all Executive Board and General Membership meetings. A log of all minutes and important organization documents is kept by the secretary.  Attendance at all meetings is essential.

The Auditor is responsible for 3 audits of the PTA financial documents each year.

The Historian tracks the amount of volunteer hours of the group and records event and program activity throughout the year.  Attendance at the majority of PTA events is necessary, as well as at meetings.

So if you're looking for a way to get more involved and are interested in "throwing your hat in the ring" for any of these positions (or know someone else who might be), please contact a member of the Nominating Committee:

* Susan Tanaka-[email protected]

Priscilla Sanders- [email protected]

* Elizabeth Orr- [email protected]
