The Georgia Peach

Our state fruit actually originated in China and is botanically in the rose family. It is also related to the plum as well as the cherry and shares some common traits with the almond specifically the corrugated seed shell. Peaches and nectarines are the same fruit- nectarines just have a smooth skin while peaches have their trademark fuzz.

Cultivation of the peach went from China to Persia, where it was brought to Europe and eventually the new world. Peaches grow in a relatively narrow band world wide as it cannot tolerate tropical  heat or extreme cold. Peaches thrive in the Mediterranean basin, Iran, France and China.

In the United States, besides our home state, California and South Carolina are the largest producers. Significant yields are also seen in the Niagara peninsula in Canada and believe it or not, in England where southward facing orchards have additional warmth and are shielded from cold and high winds.

Peaches obviously have a wide variety of uses in the kitchen. Every meal and every course can utilize their unique flavor and texture. They can be used as a topping for waffles, blintzes or pancakes, incorporated into bbq sauce used as a sweet accent in salads, pickled and pureed. Their use in desserts is unlimited- Try making your own peach soda  then turn it into a float with peach ice cream.

Peaches match well with a variety of cheeses especially triple creams and creamier bleus.

B Chambers & M Deihl

Thank you Performance Foodservice for a great competition held at their annual food show, August 21 at the Gwinnett Civic Center. Culinary Performance Battle 2012 saw both professional chefs and student teams competing in a cold food contest on the show floor. Competitors came from as far away as Jacksonville Florida to test their skills against their peers. Student teams also competed in knife skills showing judges what they have achieved in classes.

Congratulations To All Of The Winners!

"Move To" TOT's Kitchen

Marie & StudentsChefs and students from the Atlanta area are taking the next step with TOT's Kitchen. In  two weeks our chef/student teams will be presenting their version of "Chefs Move" at an area school on Cleveland Ave. With the help of Marie Johnson young students will continue to learn about healthy eating from these volunteers. Every Tuesday Chef/Student teams will rotate turns conducting a 30 to 45 minute class. There has been such a great response to the program that each team will take a turn every other month. If you are interested in getting involved in this amazing cause please contact Cheryl Glass or Committee Chair Connie Baptiste.

TOT's Kitchen August Report

All our efforts, if sustained by someone will soon fade away. Each effort is a necessary thread in the fabric of life. The difference is not made by great efforts but by small efforts done in a great way. No organisation is an island or can possibly make an impact without others. Thank you for demonstrating these ACF- Atlanta.

Well, it is that time of year again, when Tots Kitchen makes final preparation for new students. As we closed out the old school year, we are very excited to begin the new. This month we introduced ourselves to 311 students and 16 teachers. We also brought along fruit and veggie snacks. They were really really happy. Our class schedule for September is Wed- 9 am and 3pm, Thurs- 10 am and 3pm , Fri - 9am. Each class is 30 to 45 minutes. Students will have hands on experience of "MY PLATE".

We finally received a "MY PLATE" resource package from the USDA, which will be very beneficial to us. The ACF Atlanta's relentless and valuable support has been the life blood of the work we do in the communities of South Atlanta and South Dekalb. We have come this far only by your generosity which is vital to our sustenance and our ultimate survival.

We received a small (brand new) chest freezer from a kind donor. Our snacks got a big boost when The LIFT organization gave us three month's supply of cereal and milk.

The ACF members in Atlanta out did themselves by donating several months supply of cups, forks, spoons, foil, ziploc bags and much needed gloves.

The Living Water Ministries gave us a year supply of paper plates and bowls and Little Giant gave us 20 canisters of cooking gas for our stoves.

Wow! what a have great community of caring people. This is being our brothers keeper. Our children are worth it!

Two hundred and thirty (230)  wholesome, healthy, weekend snacks were distributed this month. Ron's Day Out Snack items were: Apple, banana, 100% fruit juice, cereal, milk, oatmeal breakfast bar, lunchables, cheese sticks, whole wheat crackers, cheese nips, graham crackers, apple sauce, fruit cups, microwavable beefaroni and Mac and cheese, fruit gummies, peanut and raisins.

We also distributed 5 families food boxes of 20lbs each. These were given to us by Prayer Towers Ministries.

A healthy child makes a healthy family............healthy world.

Thank you for making it possible!

Sincerely,

Marie J.
