If you have not scheduled your yearly well woman exam at Caduceus for Women, please remember that with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the health care law requires all new and non-grandfathered private insurance plans to cover a wide range of preventive services without co-payments nor will you need to pay out-of-pocket if you have not yet met your deductible.  Well woman exams are one of several preventive services included in the law.

A Patient's Journey to Caduceus
We received wonderful feedback from a patient recently, also an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, and wanted to share his story with our readers...

"Thank you guys for providing the most unique and special patient experience.  Dr. Penkoff and the Caduceus staff have really made my quality of life better.  Although I have been offered a wide variety of sub-par options and free medical care from the V.A., as I am disabled according to the recent evaluations, I have chosen to continue paying for my healthcare out of pocket due to my patient experience at Caduceus.  I went as far as signing an agreement with the V.A. binding me to only be treated by Dr. Penkoff.  Even though I still have to show up for checkups with the V.A., they know that my sole provider is Dr. P and Caduceus Medical Group.

I have had multiple exams, physician visits, and other provider evaluations with other doctors independent of your group.  I have never felt like anything more than a number, probably just like most of the other veterans I know.  I realize that working with veterans of the Vietnam war was difficult, and I am certain that working with veterans like myself of both Iraq and Afghanistan that are polytrauma (more than one or two medical issues that are disrupting quality of life) treatment may be challenging and can't be easily diagnosed.

Dr.Penkoff never showed me hesitancy or pause in doing everything that he could to try to improve my quality of life, and I have always enjoyed coming in to talk with the staff who also take as much concern and interest in my medical care.  My experience with your staff is special and I am treated more like family member with the same compassion and attentiveness you would provide to those dearest to you.  I am a loyal patient and will share my experience with anyone that will listen!"

We thank Colin for his service to our country and his support of our staff and physicians.

We always appreciate patient feedback!  You can take our online survey and also post your feedback on Yelp.
Join Us for a Covered California Q & A
Open enrollment for those new to the exchange and renewing 2014 policies starts November 15th and ends mid-February 2015.  Open enrollment is available for half the duration of the initial launch last year.

We will be hosting our next Covered California Q&A at our Life Center in Yorba Linda Wednesday, November 5th at 6 pm.  Wine and light appetizers will be provided. A Covered California representative will be our guest speaker at the Q & A.

If you are purchasing a plan through the exchange, empower yourself and your family and get educated about Covered California.  Topics to be covered include:
  • What will be the impact of narrowing provider networks?
  • Can you search for a comprehensive directory of physicians by geographic area, physician name, and/or plans?
  • Will there be a state database for 2015 that lists which doctors accept Covered California patients?
If you are interested in attending the event please email your RSVP to [email protected].

A Message From Our Medical Director
The kids have the perfect costume and are counting down the days to some trick-or-treating fun!  Try these tips to make your Halloween festivities memorable, safe, and healthy for you, your family, and all of your miniature ghouls and goblins:

  • Eat First. Having a healthy meal BEFORE your kids go trick-or-treating can reduce their temptation to "snack" while walking or to overindulge because their tummies will be full.
  • Bag It. Be sure to find the right sized collection bag for your child and steer clear of the pillow case method. If you encourage your child to only take one piece of candy from each house, they'll be able to visit each house in the neighborhood and still fill up their smaller bag.
  • Get Rid Of It! Worried you'll have leftover Halloween candy until long after long Valentine's Day? The tip above about using the smaller bag will help, but sometimes kids STILL end up with a ton of extra sweets.

Here are some ideas of what to do with all the leftover mountains of candy:

  • Pick out enough candy(after careful inspection) for one piece a day for five days and put those in the fridge. When your child asks for a piece of candy make sure to pair it with a healthy snack: an apple, a banana, some healthy nuts, or celery.
  • "Buy back" the candy from your child with money or tokens they can trade in for a fun activity: a day at the zoo, an afternoon playing at a local park, going ice skating, or a day at the pool. (Some dentist offices have been known to buy back the candy from their patients so be on the lookout for that option!)
  • Save it for holiday baking coming up.
  • Stuff a piata with it for the next birthday celebration.
  • Recycle it by using it in an arts and crafts project.
  • Safety First. Remember to stay in groups when trick-or-treating. Don't allow your child to walk up to a house alone.  Use sidewalks when available, and use crosswalks when crossing busier streets. Lastly, be home before the porch and street lights come on if possible!
