It's "Eye Time" to bring your little ones in for a vision check up!

As a parent, you may wonder whether your preschooler has a vision problem or when you should schedule your child's first eye exam.

According to the American Optometric Association, eye exams for children are extremely important, because 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child's vision problem can be crucial because children often are more responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early.

The AOA recommends infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. Children then should have additional eye exams at age 3, and just before they enter the first grade - at about age 5 or 6.

For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or as recommended by an optometrist.  Our ENT & Optometry office, Eyes n' Ears Etc., is conveniently located on our Yorba Linda campus next door to our Primary Care and same day visit clinic.  Reserve an appointment at Eyes n' Ears Etc..

Early eye exams also are important because children need many basic skills related to good eyesight for learning; a child who is unable to see print or view a blackboard can become easily frustrated, leading to poor academic performance. Some vision problems, such as lazy eye, are best treated if they are detected and corrected as early as possible while the child's vision system is still developing.

You can review  here the American Optometric Association's comprehensive list and recommendations for examination for both pediatric and adult patients.

           Did you know???

Caduceus providers share medical facts for our readers.

Stephen Daines MD, Caduceus plastic surgeon at our Yorba Linda and Irvine office locations, reveals some interesting facts about a popular procedure for our patients.

The word "rhinoplasty" is derived from the Greek words rhinos (nose) and plassein (to shape). The first rhinoplasty was likely performed almost 3000 years ago by an ancient Indian physician named Sushutra. In 1887, an American surgeon named John Roe performed the first rhinoplasty in which all the incisions were hidden inside the nose. Rhinoplasty techniques continued to evolve in the United States and Europe during the early 20th century, in part due to experience gained from treating combat veterans. Rhinoplasty has evolved significantly from its early days due to advances in techniques and instrumentation. In 2013, it is anticipated that over 250,000 Americans will undergo rhinoplasty surgery including for functional (breathing) or reconstructive purposes.
