June is National Men's Health Month

The purpose of Men's Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

Men's health is also a family issue- regular check-ups and age appropriate screenings can improve their health and reduce premature death and disability.  Please consult your Caduceus physician about the benefits of early screenings, especially if they are members of a high risk group or have a family history of disease.

With Father's Day also being in June, it seems like an appropriate time to talk about how to keep men healthy!  Here is a checklist to stay in tip-top shape:

  1. As men age, their diet becomes more and more important for staying healthy. A well-balanced diet should include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and heart-healthy fats. Here are some diet tips for staying healthy!
  2. Fiber continues to be important for all adults. Men older than 50 need 30 grams of fiber a day which can be found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
  3. Increased potassium and decreased sodium intake will lower the risk of high blood pressure. Good sources of potassium include bananas, spinach, and low-fat yogurts.
  4. Limiting unhealthy fats will help with weight control and overall health. Most of the fats you consume should be heart-healthy unsaturated fats such as avocadoes, almonds, and canola oil.

              Did you know???

Caduceus providers share medical trivia for our readers.

Holly Finley, Back in Motion physical therapist at Caduceus on Thalia, reveals that Hippocrates was the first physician who practiced physical therapy!

Physical therapy's first documented account was in the year 460 BC.  Hippocrates introduced the idea of manual manipulation for pain relief. Since then, physiotherapy has evolved from simple massage to a complex portfolio of therapies with many specialized applications.  In Ancient Greece circa 460 BC, physicians practiced a physiotherapy technique called "hydrotherapy" - which is Greek for "water treatment." The Greeks, however, were not the only people practicing physical therapy; ancient writings from Persia, China and Egypt also describe the benefits of exercise, movement and massage for ailments.
