New Long-term Study of HPV Vaccine Effectiveness
|

A new long-term study published in Pediatrics shows that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine appears to protect against the virus for at least eight years. The vaccine or a placebo shot was given to 1,781 sexually inactive boys and girls aged 9 to 15. After eight years, those who received the vaccine still had antibodies against HPV, and none had developed any of the diseases or conditions associated with HPV. Despite the vaccine's benefits, only about 57% of girls aged 11 to 15 are getting the first dose of the vaccine, and only 33% are getting all three doses. Among boys, 34% are getting the first dose of the vaccine, but only about 14% are getting all three doses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all kids aged 11 to 12 should get all three doses.
