2011 STD Surveillance Report Released

The CDC Division of STD Prevention has released the 2011 STD Surveillance Report, reporting the latest national data on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. The report finds that gay men and other men who have sex with men now account for more than 70% of all syphilis infections. Numbers and rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea infection are highest in Americans between the ages of 15 and 24. Both young men and young women are heavily affected by STDs, but young women face some of the most serious long-term health consequences. It is estimated that undiagnosed STDs cause infertility in 24,000 women each year.

The Supreme Court Affordable Care Act (ACA) Decision: What Happens Now for Adolescents and Young Adults

A recent issue brief from the Center for Adolescent Health and the Law summarizes the current health insurance status of adolescents and young adults, discusses implementation of key elements of the Affordable Care Act and what that will mean for adolescents and young adults, and highlights implementation choices still to be made by the federal government and states that will affect adolescents' and young adults' access to health insurance and health care services.

Be Smart Be Well: Let's Talk About Sexual Health

The CDC Division of STD Prevention collaborated with BeSmartBeWell.com to develop a short informational video titled "Let's Talk about Sexual Health." The five minute video is geared toward youth and young adults, encouraging open communication between healthcare providers and patients about sexual health. In the video, young adults share why they take sexual health seriously and why they need to talk with their doctors about sexual health.

New HIV Incidence Report Released

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new report, Estimated HIV Incidence among Adults and Adolescents in the United States, 2007-2010, which includes new HIV incidence estimates for 2010 and updates previously published estimates for 2007 through 2009. The report estimates that 47,500 people became infected with HIV in the US in 2010, with certain groups, including African Americans, Latinos and gay and bisexual men of all races/ethnicities, disproportionately affected. Also, when comparing 2008 and 2010 estimates, the report found a continuing increase in new infections among young gay and bisexual men, as well as early signs of a decrease in new infections among black women.

AAP and ACOG Release Statements on Emergency Contraception

Teen birth rates are significantly higher in the US as compared to other industrialized nations, and the use of emergency contraception can help reduce the rate of teen pregnancy. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have both released statements advocating for increased access to and availability of oral contraceptives, including emergency contraception. AAP and ACOG have supported over-the-counter status for Plan B One-Step regardless of age, and AAP is urging its members to prescribe emergency oral contraceptives for adolescent girls aged 16 years and younger before they need them.
