2013 ABCH Exam
Chicago March 8, 2013
Congratulations to our newest Board Certified Haircolorists!
The first ABCH exam of the year was kicked off on March 10th at America's Beauty show in chilly Chicago. We had 17 candidates and 11 passed all three portions of the exam. Interestingly enough, there were 'bunches' of candidates at this exam. In other words, out of the 17, 5 were from one salon, 4 from another and 2 from another. They came in bunches and you could tell that each group prepared for the exam together as well. The candidates were EXTREMELY professional looking and well put together. They set up their stations immaculately and spoke with confidence and knowledge and finished their tasks in the time allotted. It was obvious that they had spent a lot of time preparing for the exam. "They were definitely what I would expect from a Board Certified Haircolorist," said Tamara Dahill, ABCH Vice President. Tamara and Toni Mondragon were the Evaluation team and Emma Hirsch was our Evaluator trainee. It was a very fun and enlightening day.
Congratulations to our newest ABCH members! Next up....Denver!

PREPARING FOR THE EXAMINATION
Seeking someone to aid you in your quest to become an American Board Certified Haircolorist? Toni Mondragon could be your answer, since she has perfected the technical aspects of providing guidance in the performance portion of the examination. By using Skype, she can remotely guide a candidate through the computer during the process of exam preparation.
One very important part of the examination is preparing the mannequin for the examination. According to Toni, "This is a very important part of the exam; it sends a strong message to the evaluators on how serious the candidate is about passing. Nerves can not be an excuse for this portion of the exam," says Toni, an excuse many candidate use for their failure to pass. "The candidates can prepare their mannequins in the comfort of their salons at their own pace, unlike the examination where they are being scrutinized at every step." You can see by the pictures below that Toni is a stickler on preparing the mannequin correctly.
Preparing the left rear quadrant so it bleached one inch from the scalp takes patience and the correct bleach mixture. It required placing almost 186 foil packets in this quadrant to get this result. It can take an hour or more of placing the foils and about four hours of processing time.
If you are interested in having a mentor take you through the examination contact Toni.
She can be reached at, 303-756-6600.
Her mentored candidate's pass rate is phenomenal!

Emma Hirsch
The How and Why of Certification
Just three years into her cosmetology career Emma Hirsch was determined to take and pass the American Board Certification examination. Follow her through the process of preparing and practicing to make passing a reality. She called on a friend who was Board Certified to advise her on the details of how to pass. While preparing to take the examination she was faced with the opportunity of purchasing the salon she was working in. For most this would have been a reason for postponing the examination. As a salon owner she was more determined than ever to become certified. Let Emma tell you in her own words how taking and passing the exam gave her the marketing she needed to set her above the competition and gain respect from her staff and clients. Portions of her examination can be seen on DVD. She is going to share her score sheets with you.

SANDRA AND BRYAN DO IT AGAIN
Sandra and Bryan Smith are among the most talented makeover hair artists there are.
This effort that appeared on the cover of Modern Salon Magazine is one of their best efforts.
The rich haircolor and dynamic haircut will inspire some of our new talent into doing this type of beautiful work, which will drive business into salons. I am tired of seeing substandard work on the covers of our trade journals. Those of us who covet our craft should let the editors know when they do something exceptional, like this cover transformation, but send them a lump of coal when they participate in dumbing down our industry.

JENNIFER IS GROWING UP
Without a doubt, Jennifer Aniston has the most requested haircolor of all of the celebrities. Last year, for the first time in her movie "Wanderlust," we reported Jennifer had signs of gray hair that we had not noticed before. Now in her mid-forties it was bound to happen- gray hair will appear.
When you start to gray, you lose that beautiful soft warm tone in your hair. Your haircolor becomes darker and cooler in tone prior to the gray hair emerging. We commented on what choices her haircolorist would make to maintain the youthful glow. We now have the answer (and no great surprise) the gray was covered and all of the remaining hair was bumped to maintain the warmth. This is a good template for what to do when your clients are confronted with this same dilemma.
